Still Having Gradient Smoothness Issues

I'm still playing with this 2007FP trying to get it to display smooth gradients.

I've come to the realization that it's fine on VGA but bands on DVI.

Any idea's why that would be? Could it be related to my video issues on DVI?

Here's my original thread

The Video Issue thread

I'm surprised to find that it's fine on VGA. I won't get a change till tommorow to test it on a different card. Any idea what could cause this? I'm guess that either the Displays DVI DAC (or what ever converts the DVI signal to display) is defective or my 6600GT's DVI port is defective.

Very Strange

DVI is more accurate, so it will reveal banding more than VGA will. You might actually prefer to use VGA then.

Thats just the thing in normal use VGA doesn't look any worse than DVI. It's just as sharp, color is just as good but for some reasong DVI bands like crazy.

I wouldn't be surprised if the new panel or this panel on another video card is fine. I guess I'll have to start component testing rather than trying to troubleshoot the software.

What specifically do you mean by banding though? Duplicate color in one area, sharp transitions between colors, or an actual color tint over one color where there's not supposed to be?

I took a couple of photos.

Here's DVI and VGA

I've downsized them and converted to grey scale (my white balance was off when I shot, still stuck on flash from shooting in the studio)

These photos make DVI look better than it acually is and VGA a little worse.

The gradients on DVI just aren't as smooth and also show some very slight shifting to green or magenta as well as defined banding.

Hopfully this is a little clearer.

Is this the original panel or the replacement sent by Dell?

I will note that I read a review of the LG 2000C that reportedly has the same panel and they also mentioned banding as an issue. Could be a problem with this panel. Which would suck.

This is the original it's also got some weird issues with Overlay Video but again only over DVI.

There is VERY little banding on VGA nearly identical to my CRT.

I'm convinced it's got somthing to do with the DVI input or output on my card. When the new panel comes i'll if i've got the same issues I'll try it on my roommates PC.

I almost looks like you are running with 16 bit color instead of 32 bit color set in the control panel.

I wish it were that simple!

Ive had the same problem on my 2405 too. Only with greys though (and i did notice some on morrowind aswell).

I didnt let it bother me though, the colour is great other than that, and games look fantastic. But it was annoying when i was doing some photoshop work not too long ago.

EDIT: For the record though, i had the problem on my 7800GT, but havent experimented on the X1900 so it may be different.

Well the new panel should arrive today or tommorow. Hopfully it solves my problem. If not I'll try and eliminated the Video card as causing the problem.

Anyone else think of somthing I've missed software wise?

Do you have the replacement yet. The 2007fp is on sale ($509) and I am thinking about it.

Though I must say it is not looking good for this panel(same one in L2000c. The review I read indicated banding in the L2000C and one user review mentions the same thing:

Dang.

Just my opinion I guess, but why would you even get the FP when the WFP is only $40 more, and I havn't seen any complaints about gradiant bands on that.

There's a chance I just missed it though..

This is a multipurpose monitor, including productivity. I would pay more for 1600x1200 (1.92 Million pixels) than for 1680x1050 ( 1.76 Million pixels). Screen real estate is king for me. Wide screen looks nice but I am not going to sacrifice size for the aspect ratio. The 4:3 FP is nearly as wide as the WFP and much taller.

If the 2007fp is crap then I will look elsewhere for my 1600x1200 minimum res, including just getting another CRT and waiting for LCD to get this stuff behind them.
