Still have a Q6600 G0 SLACR BNIB. Should I save it forever? Donate to a museum?

I suppose if I wanted a business-class server, I'd find a Xeon system. But my home-server needs are not "business-class." Really, there are only three flesh-and-blood users. An old Q6600 is still overkill firepower.

I have piles of junk accumulated from building new computers and maintaining them as they age. Among the junk, parts that can be used for some limited, well-defined purpose.

It's just interesting to trace how there were end-user needs and wants accommodated to a Moore's Law scenario. One friend -- not too computer savvy -- was rocking an old Pentium with Win 95 system until maybe 2007. That just seems like a mismatch to any end-user mainstreamer. But then, this is a 2014 perspective.

When you can get a G3258 combo for $100 or less with motherboard, 4GB DDR3 for $40, and a 120GB SSD for $60, and a case + PSU (suit to taste), for $100 or less if you go cheap, you can build quite a box these days for only $300. Then add OS and stir.

Even that's expensive, compared to a tablet. MC has a Windows 8.1 tablet from Toshiba, I think, for $150. Real Windows. On a tablet. Who would have thought?

Don't even home servers normally run 24/7? Unless you're only going to run a few hours a day it would be cheaper in the long run to buy a very low power dual core CPU.

I was tempted get a Q6600 G0 + P45 board used on Ebay, then I was reminded by reality that I could get a new OCeable H81 + Pentium AE for slightly more, runs just as fast or faster even at multithread stuff while using far less power, has USB3/SATA3 and the mobo isn't the obnoxiously large full ATX.

Still isn't as ridiculous at S939 X2s selling for ~$200 as late as 2010 when a new CPU + mobo set costs less and performs better.

Donate it to me. I could really use a new computer.

I think shipping would cost more than those parts are worth. I've heard that computer parts are crazy expensive in India, like 2x more than in the US, is it true? I know for sure that that's the case in Brasil but I'm not sure about India.

Haha VirtualLarry, my mom is still using the Q6600 rig that I built for her 7 yrs ago... I have 2 more-modern rigs sitting at home just taking up space, I need to donate one of those to her and part out the q6600 rig.
