Ok, in the CPU forum, I was recommended a excellent CPU and a motherboard in the motherboard forum. Now on to video.

I just want some nice performance. I have been thinking about the 9800GTX at launch, But still unsure if the leaked benchmarks hold water.

But with the motherboard I chose * EVGA 790i* I am going to stay with Nvidia for a while longer. So I am looking to spend around or about $300-$350 for a video card.

Recommendations welcome. Parts chose thus far are below.

Antec P182SE
Intel E8400
EVGA 780i SLI

If you're only going to spend that little, you're not going to be doing SLI, presumably?

I was gonna recommend that if you're going to spend that kind of money on a mobo + DDR3 memory, you should at least get a pair of G92-based GPUs for some SLI... Probably the 8800GTS, IMO.

For that money I'd buy 2 9600GT in SLI or wait a week and buy the 9800 GTX when it's released, depending on how it benches of course.

That's only going to be better than the 8800GT/GTS/9800GTX/etc if you're gaming at 1920x1200 with AA turned on.

Or, really, any other situation where the other cards will be RAM-limited.

The 8800GTX has lower clocks all around, but it has a larger memory bus, so in memory-limited scenarios it still rules the roost.

Once this PC is assembled, it will be running on a 40 inch Samsung LCD. 1920x1080 resolution. I know it will be in 16:9 instead of 16:10. But this will be a temporary solution until I purchase a 22 inch monitor.

I just don't see the need for a monitor bigger than a 22. So once I get it, it will be 1680 x 1050 and I would like some AA as well as AF.

And before anyone asks, I don't even like Crysis. So it doesn't factor in here at all :)

Does this 8800GTS support Tri Sli ?

You can't do Tri-SLI with 8800 GTS. If you really want to do tri then you'll need 8800GTX, ultra, or the new 9800GTX which should be priced around $350.

Don't worry about Tri-SLI, it's just not worth the money. The 9800GTX is going to be too memory-limited to take advantage of it, and the 8800GTX is a bit slow in the other important areas to really benefit.

There is no way I am going to use Tri-SLi right away anyway. If I get a card that supports it, it would be an option down the road.

I read rumor's that the price point for the 9800GTX is around $299.00. Any truth to that so far ? Confirmed ?

If it is indeed at that price point, then I will be picking that card up for sure. Unless I could get two 9600GT's in SLi for that price or cheaper.

Yea, I agree. I think the 9800GTX would be a good choice.

Then maybe down the road, I can add another for SLi.

By the way. If I get a EVGA card, do you think the GT200 will be out before the step-up ends ?

Well the skuttlebutt is that it all depends on when ATI gets off their duff and release whatever they have for next gen cards.

So you're guess is as good as mine.

Probably not since GT200 is scheduled for late 3rd quarter early 4th quarter.

I would definitely pick up the 9800gtx. I am when it releases in a couple days. Also if you do wait and do the step up program your 90 days would put you somewhere in july and the 4870x2 is rumored to be out in may/june which if that graphics card is the new lead it would force nvidia to push production like surfsatwerk said
