OK been going back and forth for over a month now and and have a little more time to decide. My 2 choices to pair with the P4 1.6A I will be getting are: Asus P4B266 or Asus P4S333. I think I may pickup some Samsung PC2700 DDR RAM right now and use with either since it is well below Crucial right now. Let me know what you all think? I will be using new system for gaming and plan to overclock it some (about 2ghz) will be good. Thanks for any and all advice. I really want a reliable setup. Not so much into which overclocks better etc.
thanks again,
herb

Since you have waited this long, I suggest you wait just a little longer and get the ASUS P4B533 instead.

Wait. If you haven't bought DDR, why not consider getting RDRAM and Asus P4T533 I think it's called (or P4T-1066) and oc to 533fsb+PC1066. 533FSB+PC1066 will be faster than any DDR setup and with current prices, DDR is hardly cheaper than Samsung RDRAM which will in most cases hit PC1066.

Do you wanna overclock or not anyway??? In my opinion after owning the ASUS P4T-E for over a month, if u wanna o/c go DDR....For best stock performance and simple CPU upgrading when performance is not enough for you get the ASUS with 533FSB (Intel 850E chipset) and PC1066 RDRAM-So simple....

herbage11~ How about a link to that review? Other than the SiS645DX ref. board, here is the only production 645DX board review I've been able to find. However, if you want to o/c a Northwood, get an Abit TH7II, or an i850e board (if you can wait another month) with RDRAM.

There's no question that DDR is no longer cheaper than PC800, but I've got to believe it will be a lot cheaper than PC1066 (and that is what he will need for an i850e board). ;)

I was leaning that was for the stablilty factor. But both of these mobos seem to be well liked. Thanks.

Yes BMW330ci I have seen people running a P4B266 mobo. with PC2700 RAM. May not take full advantage of it but think it will run. And I have found some Samsung 512 MB DDR for $50 cheaper then Crucial 512MB of PC2100. May go with the 2700 and P4B266.

I'm in the same situation as you -- can't decide whether to wait for the P4B533 or just get the P4B266 with the Samsung 512MB 2700. This is going to be my first Pentium 4 rig. I think the P4B533 will arrive next month. Check this article on the i845E and i845G based motherboards.

This will be my 1st P4 build as well. I am pumped. This is really the toughest choice of the whole system. Have waited a long time already so I will most likely wait atleast to see how the 533 works out. And even if I dont get it (533) a few of the other things should be cheaper by then. Let me know what you decide.

They're actually not too bad at all... I'd consider one myself...

The Pentium 4 with 533Mhz bus will be expensive when its released in May so I'm going to buy the Pentium 4 2Ghz or 2.2Ghz 400MHz FSB after the next price cut, which is coming up soon. I'm waiting for the 2Ghz or 2.2Ghz to drop to around $200 so if the Asus P4B533 arrives within that time frame, then I'll buy that. Otherwise I'm going to buy the P4B266 and upgrade to the P4B533 when the prices of the P4 533FSB also drop during the summer.

Thats my take! =)
