Here is another big boost for the Nook Color:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bovg4aBFnA8

USB support! This is not available to the public yet, but as you can see from that video the primary CM7 kernel dev for the Nook Color verygreen has working USB support.

As a sidenote I am using the newest CM7 builds now and its very nice with a new custom uboot (no more touching reading). Thanks to Chainfire3D I have been rocking Tegra games, here is more info:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093390

Finally Hulu works with a new version of Flash ( I think its much smoother), here is how:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1040971

Next big thing is if we get an IMEI generator in CM7 so that swype and HBO work without fighting.

More big news in Nook Colorland. First of all, this awesome program:

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.dalingrin.nookcolortweaks&feature=search_result

Let you control the headphone and speaker independently. That means you can make the speaker as loud as you need (or mute it completely), while keeping your headphones at a volume that avoids distortion. This is a huge boost to usability.

Another benefit of the program is that if you install it and the newest overclock kernel, it lets you set the power level for each step for the CPU from 125 to 1600!!!! That means on the low end the Nook Color should last longer on power, as its floor can be 125mhz instead of 300. Secondly that means people can go up to 1.6GHZ (and someone has). Mine freezes at 1.4GHZ personally, but somewhere between 1300 and 1400 is my sweet spot.

I was having a lot of FC's and assorted weirdness so I opted to go back to CM7,wiped data and am pleased to say everything is running beautifully again. The Dev's are doing awesome work here.

The Nook Color boots from its SD slot so its impossible to brick. Hacking is pretty easy for this reason, but learning the lingo can be challenging.

Its a great tablet if you are open to experimentation and are willing to hack. The issue is the time drain to learn what to do. I can go from stock Nook Color to tablet in 15 mins, but it took me two weeks to learn the process. I have tried to drop most of that knowledge in this thread.

If you want a project with a definate payoff get a Nook Color, if you want a tablet with little fuss get a Transformer.

I also have an Asus Transformer and love it,briefly considered selling my Nook but frankly am having a lot of fun playing with it.The Nook is an excellent learning tool that got me excited about tech again. The smaller form factor also makes the nook more useful in situations when handling a 10.1 inch tablet would be uncomfortable

I'm installing CM7 on my Nook for the first time.

*fingers crossed*

edit: that was fairly painless since I was already rooted. Even found a link to the Netflix app that works fine from it. Still have to download the OC kernal, but that can wait till tomorrow. Also fairly content with Aldiko reader too. It'll do the job well enough for me to not miss the stock reader app even though I do plan on reading a lot with this.

congrats and welcome aboard!

i tried aldiko and many other readers, but i ended up liking fbreader the best. i also bought the nook thinking i'd read a lot with it, but i have been watching a lot of hulu, netflix, and avi movies on it. also waste quite a bit of time on the stupid games :\

Be sure to install the Nook Tweaks app from the market if you install the overclock kernel so you can set custom steppings. I use 300/600/900/1100/1300 and its stable for me. I also use On-Demand governor.

Don't forget the Nook Android app, it now allows for magazines.

Big news in NookColorland Today- working overclock AND usb!!!!!!!!!

Flash the following things in this order (before GAPPS if this is a fresh install):

Nightly 106:

http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=encore

This kernel:

http://coachz.inetpro.org/~dalingrin/nook/kernels/061811/update-CM7-dalingrin-OC-emmc-061811.zip

Then this file:

http://api.viglink.com/api/click?fo...291 - xda-developers&txt=http://db.tt/GDhtfZ8

Finally after you are done and rebooted back into CM7, install the tool from this post:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1105497

Use that tool to enable USB. then use it. Turn off USB for the device to sleep.

I have been using a USB mouse all day, its a trip!

Finally, I recommend this Honeycomb theme:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1121144

Best one I have tried.

*sigh* Every time I try something new it's always one step forward and 2 steps back. I updated CM7 to a new nightly, and the mod manager started yelling at me about not being rooted. Then the market started force closing, so I figured I'd delete it and try again. False... I can't reinstall the google apps again using any method I've used in the past. Now I'm going to have to restart it all from scratch... probably use a different nightly and then never ever touch it again.

Apologies in advance if this is wildly off topic.

After having a Nook for 7 months, getting ready to root it.

Has anyone gotten USB audio out to work (i.e. using an external DAC)?

Thanks!

Good question. The support exists but is VERY preliminary, like it was releases yesterday. Right now it it working for Skype. Here is the info from the source:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14860342&postcount=264

As of now it requires ADB and really advanced stuff to get it working. If you are willing to wait a few weeks it will get built into the CM7 kernel with a few fixes not figured out yet.

I am trying to back everything up now, so I can try with my army of USB audio devices to help testing.
