Stick with AMD X4 9850BE or go to AMD X4 620 Propus?

I'm trying to decide what to do...keep my current AMD X4 9850BE or go to an AMD X4 620 Propus?

I have the 9850 clocked at 3GHz right now. I can get up to 3.2GHz but it requires 1.45v as opposed to 1.35v for 3GHz and temps go up too much at that voltage.
I could get the AMD 620 but I've seen that overclocks are sorta all over the place right now on those chips and I'm not even sure my motherboard could go up to high HTT speeds which would be required since the multiplier is locked...
I do some video transcoding (ripbot264) and some gaming.

What do you think?

The only advantage it will have is that it will use less electricity at 3-3.2ghz, but other than that it will probably end up being slower due to the lack of cache. Since clockspeed is going to be about the same, don't bother.

X4 620 comes in two flavors, some are harvested Denebs with disabled L3 which in my opinion might overclock better. The other kind are Propus, the true Athlon... what a mess right?

There was a test with the 620 against a 9550 and the 9550 sometimes won or was at least very close. With an OCed 9850 don't bother. You'd probably want to wait for the 95W 945's to drop in price if you have any inclinations to actually see improved performance.

That doesn't even sound like an upgrade. That would be like saying you have an E8400 and you're thinking about buying an E8600; it's more of a sideways step.

Not many processors would be worth getting at the moment since a 9850 should be able to run any game. Sure something like a Phenom 965 is better in a hand full of games that really are CPU limited at this time, but for the most part you wouldn't really gain anything by upgrading your CPU. It's sort of like buying a Ferrari to replace your Toyota because it goes faster even though you only ever drive the speed limit; both are fast enough for the job so it really doesn't matter.

My guess is that it wouldn't be a very noticable upgrde. I've only seen info on 2 reviews, one was AT that only got to ~3.2GHz, the other got to 4GHz. My guess is this would be a pretty sideways move.

erm no, ppl dont buy a ferrari just to get from point A to point B, ppl buy ferrari's to impress ppl, and in that regards a toyota & a ferrari have nothing whatsoever to do in common.

Does anybody know how they compare to each other clock for clock? If i remember corectly the X4 9850 was about 10% slower than the Q6600. The problem with the old Phenoms was that they didnt overclock all that well. But at 3 ghz they aint no slouches either. I say stick with your Phenom. I dont think there is much of a difference between the two performance wise.

At 2.6Ghz, the Athlon II X4 620 and Phenom 9950 are very close in performance swapping blows with one another. It's not much of an upgrade unless your lucky and unlock a Phenom II or achieve a high overclock with it.

No reason to do the upgrade unless you want less heat and/or to lower your energy consumption. Performance is very close clock-for-clock. For video transcoding the 620 is probably a bit faster (clock for clock), but for gaming it would be a bit slower. Would the differences be noticeable? Probably not for the majority of applications.
