These types can make a case for Jobs in that the iPhone opened up a massive new revenue stream for gaming. Zuckerberg might be on the list because those facebook games are big business as well, and that market wasn't really making money until facebook. These two have directly and indirectly helped make gaming mainstream. To these people, it makes more sense to say these two more than Newell or Miyamoto. They probably dont even know who they are. Doesnt make it right...its just a survey.

yes, this is the only argument I can see as being valid--expanding the industry to housewives and even younger children, and heck--just about anyone. But then, Jobs would be no more influential than the Zuckster.

and even then, Apple's influence on the industry would have not been at the hand of Jobs--again, he would rather a game have never touched the iPhone. ever. This wasn't exactly a secret.

Ugh, casual... entertainment players and their Ugly Birds.

To be fair thats the biggest money maker these days. It only makes sense the industry would go where the dollars are.

Cracked had a couple articles on this. Lemme see if I can find one.

Casual gaming (Angry Birds and similar games) is a completely different market though. You don't see someone trying to decide between Cut the Rope or Skyrim. ;)

It's more akin to the Flash Games market.

But it's a completely new, massive market that is part of the same industry.

it's a market that, for decades, everyone that was impossible to attract into the industry.

I think that's the point.

this is true, but I could see a developer deciding to make games for smartphones instead of games for consoles

Because Skyrim cost 10 million to make and cut the rope cost about..... zero. Some dude made it off the clock for a percentage later. And is probably a rich bastard now.

I'd say the 26% were Ipad users (or at least casual gamers at best) and probably thought that "Video Games" were the kind you would get for an Ipad. hence, since "He was the creator", he got their vote. I mean let's face it, the number of Casual Ipad or Smart Phone gamers is significantly larger than Console or PC gamers.

My Wife thinks she is a "Video Gamer" but her idea of gaming is Tetris or Bejeweled. Goes to show that different people have different impressions.

No, I'm pretty sure you have to sport a rig with ground effects, consume inordinate amounts of caffeine-spiked beverages, and wait in line for midnight releases before other gamers officially accept as "a gamer."

you know, like--a real gamer.

Not being a grammar nazi I just don't like the phrase "methinks," it's hipsterish and stupid.

So does the second use of the word nazi or hitler mean the thread is back to normal? Like a double negative?

This. With a grain of salt.

I got no problems with games like tetris and Bejeweled. And i think it is great that main stream casual gamers can get into them. And that they lend a certain level of respectability to gaming today. all good things.

But to me, a (real) gamer is one who buys their system (either PC or console) with the intent to play games. Not an Ipad with the intent to surf the net, and "Oh, by the way, it plays games". And someone who defines games as something at least a little more complex than those found on Facebook.

Wow. People that hate the Jobs and the cheap "gamer" trend associated with Angry Birds, too? I'm in the right place. <3 this thread.

Thanks to Steve Jobs, we have the Internet, the pyramids, vehicles, Tang, and the pet rock.

WTG!

On a more serious note, this is just the thoughts of a handful or misguided souls. This is kind of like who crappy art becomes collectible after the artists dies (especially if he/she dies horribly).

I don't think so. Dumb games like Bejeweled and Angry Birds make people think of gaming as a really stupid, simplistic hobby. Casual mainstream games like these overshadow the deep and engrossing nature of well developed video games.

But they don't even enjoy REAL video games. Just stupid flash games that you can find for free online.

AND they pay money for them! AND they think that they are good games! AND they then make fun of you for buying an ACTUAL game that costs some $$ because 'oh I can play angry birds for $5 and its so good'

FYI

Assuming Angry Birds sells for $1, Blizzard would need to sell 8.3MM units of SC2 @ $60 each to match the revenue of Angry Birds.

While most on this forum play their games on xbox/ps3/PC/etc, there are millions of casual gamers that play games on their iphones/itouch/etc

note/emphasis: i do not agree that SJ was the most influential man in video games

Angry Birds also has free versions, which I'm sure make a huge percentage of that.
