no woz

c'mon, if anyone at Apple was influential in gaming at all, it would be Woz. He was the one who wanted the Apple II to be a gaming machine instead of just a business machine.

But even so, Miyamoto, Gabe, Carmack... all way more influential in gaming than anyone at Apple, ESPECIALLY Steve Jobs.

Looks like people are out of touch with reality.

How did John Romero and John Carmack not get on the list? Without Doom and Quake, who knows where games would be today?

Someone posted that this survey was taken at a "cloud/web 2.0/iOS/social media" event of some sort. Most of those people probably haven't even heard of those guys. Maybe some of them have heard of Doom; Quake, probably not.

Jobs greatest contribution to gaming was becoming disinterested in it. When Apple started focusing on usability and aestethics at the cost of computing power, many computer game developers had no choice but to focus most of their energy on PC gaming. This developer focus combined with Microsoft's successful standardization of PC gaming with DirectX and leaps in sound and graphics tech on solidified the PCs foothold in computer gaming.

That being said, I believe Jobs was the least influential person in gaming for the past 10-15 years. That poll was just silly.

Steve was a good guy

negatory. 90% of people with personal contact with him say he was a giant prick. it used to be that the rumor was, that getting on the elevator at apple while steve jobs was on it would get you fired because he would pick you apart and then shitcan you before you could get off it

Fucking pathetic. I'm not "happy he died" or anything, but god damn am I glad Jobs is gone. Now we can start progressing away from his bullshit, until Apple tards find another idol.

Steve was a good guy

I lost all respect for the guy when he denied his own child. Instead of stepping up and doing what was right, he put up a fight and denied the child was his.

Anyone that does not take care of their children is a piece of trash in my book.

From 2008

"The truth is Steve Jobs doesn't care about games. This is going to be one of those things that I say something in an interview and it gets fed back to him and I'm on his s***head list for a while on that, until he needs me to do something else there. But I think that that's my general opinion. He's not a gamer," Carmack explained in an interview with Eurogamer.

Hmmm, with the continual barrage of "info" about him, I figured he was just the most influential man, period.

What a joke, Jobs has always been anti-gaming and iOS only indirectly became a huge factor in gaming. It's not like Nintendo where they pushed a mobile gaming device meant for gaming, Apple made an all purpose device that other people happened to make games for because it's a good/popular platform. If anything I'd say he was detrimental to gaming, Mac's might have been able to provide some good competition for Windows for gaming if Apple had ever bothered to put any effort into it, but they never cared and they still don't.

Me thinks you have no idea what Godwins law actually is.

*sigh*

Godwin's Law: As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1. Once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever debate was in progress.

Negative influence is still influence...like Hitler.

This is a comparison to Hitler. It was not made with the intention of invoking Godwin's Law, nor is it a natural part of the discussion (i.e. Godwin's law can not be invoked when talking about something that Hitler or the Nazi's actually did.)

Godwin's law does not require that the comparison be inflammatory, or even wrong, only that it compares something to Hitler with out it being a natural part of the discussion. The entire point of Godwin's law is that comparisons to Nazis and Hitler are so common that they are losing all meaning and becoming cliche.

FYI

Angry Birds has been praised for its successful combination of addictive gameplay, comical style, and low price. Its popularity led to versions of Angry Birds being created for personal computers and gaming consoles, a market for merchandise featuring its characters and even long-term plans for a feature film or television series. With a combined 500 million downloads across all platforms and including both regular and special editions,[3] the game has been called "one of the most mainstream games out right now",[4] "one of the great runaway hits of 2010",[5] and "the largest mobile app success the world has seen so far".[6]

In its first month on sale, StarCraft II sold a total of three million copies worldwide.[12] As of December 2010, the game has sold nearly 4.5 million units.[81]

Assuming Angry Birds sells for $1, Blizzard would need to sell 8.3MM units of SC2 @ $60 each to match the revenue of Angry Birds.

While most on this forum play their games on xbox/ps3/PC/etc, there are millions of casual gamers that play games on their iphones/itouch/etc

note/emphasis: i do not agree that SJ was the most influential man in video games

You have to take into account the audience of the survey that responded.

LGC takes place at One Wimpole Street. The event kicks off at 4pm for four hours of incisive keynotes and talks about the digital issues the games industry faces, with perspectives from retailers, digital distributors and publishers. The conference is followed by dinner and networking.

300 execs are expected to attend the event, which is now in its third year.

These types can make a case for Jobs in that the iPhone opened up a massive new revenue stream for gaming. Zuckerberg might be on the list because those facebook games are big business as well, and that market wasn't really making money until facebook. These two have directly and indirectly helped make gaming mainstream. To these people, it makes more sense to say these two more than Newell or Miyamoto. They probably dont even know who they are. Doesnt make it right...its just a survey.

Maybe back in the Oregon Trail and Odell Lake days, maybe.

nah, that ws the time when he turned down any suggestion from his employees that they should work on games.

Jobs is well known to have despised games, and wanted absolutely nothing to do with them. He felt that the Mac was a holy pillar of human sanctifying grace that should never be tainted by the dastardly presence of a video game.

This is why there was never any serious development for games on Apple for 3...4? decades.
