Can't stand this attitude. How can anyone reasonably expect a gadget blog to turn down an early look at an iPhone prototype? If the guy selling it claimed it was lost in a bar, and Gizmodo did the right thing after they got it (cooperating with law enforcement and providing information about the guy that sold it), I don't see a problem. You'd only have a problem with it if you were a Steve Jobs' ass-kisser.
When its clear the guy stole it and is soliciting money. Not sure how you'd consider that not outright theft. Only someone without any integrity would actually pay the guy. The only reason he got off free is because Apple got them to raid his house without a warrant.

If the guy SAID it wasn't stolen, and Gizmodo tried to return it to Apple, they would have been fucking stupid to turn away the opportunity to look at it. If Apple took proper action against the thief, with Gizmodo's full cooperation, the charges would have stuck.
