I was thinking Peter North at first for some reason.

I've noticed that a lot of people despise Gibson because they think he's a sensationalist.

His articles are interesting and his tools are useful IMO but I can see how people might be put off by his "sky is falling" mentality.

yup... but both were gods of their time.. :)

i still love NU, i wish they will make another NU. I was able edit files in hex.. most of my hacking days were with the editor.. changing stuff to get to high levels in games = changing the credits to our own name..

hehehe.. :)

Why do people hate Gibson? I've used a couple of his tools and view his site to be pretty useful.

His tools are pretty good, it's his "atmosphere of fear" rhetoric that bothers me.

well, gibson did go overboard regarding the threat Win 2000/XP posed because most people log in as Admin.

but his point was still legitimate albeit a bit overstated.

I completely agree. He is a very, very intelligent guy but I think he's irritated a lot of people along the way. I still have a lot of respect for him, though. I am sure he's forgotten more about computers than I'll ever know to begin with.

Part of his "Atmosphere of fear/Sky is faling" impression is that he understands much more about these vulnerabilities than anyone else. So, in his mindset it really is that important. Better to error on the side of cautiousness than to give benefit of the doubt to those who don't understand.

It's a shame if anyone's dissuaded from using his tools/reading his webpage if you're a little put off by his presentation. He makes good stuff.

See, I read it as condescension. He thinks normal users are too stupid to get the point if he presents the idea in a rational, concise way, so he feels that he has to use tabloid-style antics to get people to listen. He's the parent who tells his child "If you don't brush your teeth three times a day, YOUR TEETH WILL FALL OUT AND YOU WILL SMELL AWFUL!" What he says isn't really untrue, I just prefer getting people to understand why they should or should not do something, instead of scaring them into doing whatever I say.

He also has a staunch anti-Microsoft slant, and while I'm not exactly a Microsoft lover, I dislike extremists of all kinds.

He also frequently teams up with another panic-mongering runt, Marc Maiffret of eEye.

These folks routinely show up in Rob Rosenburger's rants and hysteria roll calls. In fact, I'm astounded that Maiffret never made it onto the hysteria roll call, but he is frequently lambasted.

i met peter norton of norton utilities fame many years ago. (5~6 years) he came to my highschool to give a talk about something i dont remember. he was already a big philanthropist at teh time.

i ate dinner across from him in our school dining hall, and asked him stupid questions. i told him about the millions of machines i resurrect with his software.

when he left he gave me a compaq armada laptop as a loaner, i gave it to the school when i graduated.
