So this Olympic athlete gets a 6 monthe sentence for using steroids and other things. I think this is a joke. When an olympic athlete competes or wins a competition, they are cheating other olympic athletes who may have trained for years just for their chance at fame in the olympics. I think at minimum they should get four years of jail time. My reasoning is that is the time wasted in training and preparation between one Olympic competition and the next one.

If these athletes get endorsements that is even worse because that makes them guilty of fraud.

To make you happy, how much time should she spend in jail?

Yet steroid use is rampant in all sports. What are the odds that those she was competing against were also using steroids at one point.

Uhh.. she wasn't convicted of using that stuff, she was convicted of perjury and check fraud. The respective Athletic Organizations have rules regarding the use of that stuff and that's enough, we don't need Big Brother getting involved with it any more than it already is. We certainly don't need Senate hearings about it when there are so many more important issues they should be addressing.

You want to tie up our already-overcrowded prison system by sentencing athletes who cheat at competitions to jail time along with criminals?

Just ban them from future competitions and be done with it. This should be taken care of in-house, and not involve any portion of the Justice system. Now, for the check-fraud, yes - that is a matter of criminal/civil action, but not the "cheating at sports" part.

No they shouldn't be going to jail, but I think we have 2 million people in prison now. I doubt a few hundred more are going to break the system.

Of course not, but why not actively try to relieve stress on the troubled system?

That's like saying "Well, the hole in the ozone is already miles wide. I doubt me using this one can of CFCs is going to kill us all."

We are relying *way* too much on the government for things that are better and more logically handled on a smaller scale. Hell, next thing we'll have is congressional hearings on Junior High Spelling Bees. :D

No thanks. I think committing perjury is an offense that should always be punishable by jail time. The real problem with the prisons are drug crimes that are punished too harshly, and that needs to be addressed directly - not through arbitrarily selecting other offenses to lighten up on.

Their competitors are using roids, too, it's not like they cheated them out of anything in reality, they just had a crappier doctor. I think 4 years is stiff for a roid catching. I actually see drug use in sports as a civil or sporting issue, not a criminal one and don't really see the benefit to putting prison times to people using a drug in their sport (even though the law allows prison time).

yes, she is a real danger to society......

isn't that what prisons are for?

Why does the US have more people in prison than the rest of the world, combined?

Try reading a bit closer next time.

I'm arguing purely against criminalizing drug charges, particularly steroids when related to sports. I've already stated that the perjury and fraud charges against her are legit.

In short, I'm arguing against the OP's statements, not the actual situation.

The perjury charges are enough to justify jail time in this case, but steroid use should be punished with a lifetime ban from
amateur sports, and steroid use by professionals should also be punished by lifetime bans in their respective sport as well.
For that matter, conviction of drug use like cocaine, meth, or one of the other controlled substances should also bring lifetime
removal from the sports arena.

6 months for steroid use would be a ridiculously long sentence, IMO.

And she didn't get sent up for steroid use, she got sent up for perjury. It would behoove you (which does not mean "put hooves on you") to understand the distinction.

I think the use of steriods should not result in any jail time. But if it's the rules of the olympics then they should just have big suspensions or perminent bans from competing.

Reading skills lacking a bit?
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) -- Marion Jones was sentenced Friday to six months in prison for lying about using steroids and a check-fraud scam

She got the jail time for lying and check fraud, not using steroids. THAT should bring a perma-ban from sports.
