I think his popularity suffered when he went to Sirius, and he knows it. I called this the day he went to Sirius and then started calling people cheap who didn't subscribe to listen to his show.

Citadel, Sirius May Share Stern
Rumors that Howard Stern might stage a return to terrestrial radio have come and gone since he joined Sirius Satellite Radio in January 2006, but there may actually be some truth to them.

Sirius Satellite Radio head Mel Karmazin, Farid Suleman - head of Citadel Broadcasting, which will be taking over Disney/ABC radio stations - and Stern himself are reportedly negotiating a deal, according to Media Life. The deal would likely be similar to the one reached by radio hosts Opie & Anthony, who are now "shared" by both XM Satellite Radio and CBS Radio. The Opie & Anthony XM/CBS Radio deal marked the first time a program exclusive to satellite radio had been syndicated via terrestrial radio, the companies said.

Stern's departure from terrestrial to satellite was marked by controversy when CBS Radio filed a lawsuit against him, which helped keep Stern in the spotlight. Now, however, his profile seems to have faded some. In March 2005, for example, the phrase "Howard Stern" accounted for 0.035 percent of all search queries. By mid-August of this year, that percentage had fallen to 0.0036, a 90 percent decline.

On the other hand, Sirius's share of visits spiked to their highest point during Stern's first month on satellite in January, passing those of arch-rival XM. Since then, Sirius visits have remained above XM's.

He has disputed these claims many times and most recently yesterday. He has no intention of going back to regulr radio. I listen to his show daily. Notice they never attempt to get a quote from him in these articles.

Not sure how the co-airing of both satellite and terest would work with Stern. He'd pretty much have to conduct a semi-clean show again. That would allienate satellite listeners who pay to hear an unedited version. But if he didn't curb his language, the feed on terestrial would be unbearable from all the bleeping to cover up the bad stuff.
