I think I know which wire it is, partly by process of elimination, and partly thanks to the Crutchfield photo. It's most likely the indicated pin, not visible in the photo.
When I turn on the lights, I read 12.3V coming from that particular pin. I assume that this is a signal to the stereo that the lights are on, and that it should dim itself. I just want to be sure, so that I don't fry my new stereo with a voltage input it wasn't supposed to receive.
Edit: Oh well, guess I found it myself anyway. This page indicates that a 12V signal is normal. Here goes....
I got a new stereo system (a very nice Kenwood, I'll have a thread on that tomorrow), and it's almost entirely wired in place, save one feature: dimming when the headlights are turned on.
There was some other wiring spliced onto the Hyundai factory-installed connector, which was done when I had a previous stereo installed (KOSS brand). It does not have anything labeled "Illumination," nor are there any extra wires. There are three for power, and 8 for the 4 speakers.
Coming from the stereo is a wire labeled "Illum" which controls the dimming.
So the stereo is wired to the spliced-in connectors, since they were the ones that were labeled. I stupidly cheaped-out and didn't just buy the Crutchfield harness. However, there is a nice, high-res picture there of the harness.
The question is, which of those pins does that orange wire on the left go to? That should be the illumination-control wire. If I know which pin it goes to, I can match it to the corresponding one on the factory wiring and splice into it.
Other than this, the installation went reasonably well. The new system started up on the first try, with no sparks or fires, so I'm pretty happy with it.
