I'm going home at the end of today for the long weekend, and while I'm home I figured i'd try and set up one of the spare computers to do stuff that I can't do on campus.

I've researched, and found that I need a remote desktop manager and the capability to wake on lan. What i'm wondering though, is what kind of equipment will I need to set it up and can somebody make some reccomendations and/or a walkthrough as to how to do it.

At home I have a 4 port Netgear router (BEFW something S4, its a wireless-b with 4 ethernet connections) and on the computer I intend to use, i'm running 2k with a pentium 4 on an Asus P4B-533 original mobo, and a Linksys wireless adaptor (I'm not sure of model number, but its a USB wireless-b adaptor). I also have access to a pci D-Link wireless-b adaptor and the standard ethernet port.

What I need is a way to remotely start the pc from my dorm (wake on lan), and remote control it (remote desktop). What are the steps for doing this, and what do you reccomend as a secure option for remote desktop viewing? Will I need any other supplies to make this work? I realize I could just install linux, but my parents use the computer and they'd have trouble dealing with it, and I don't have time this weekend to educate them.

thanks in advance.

WOL + Wireless = No Go....

You can't wake on lan a wireless card...

Win2K does not have remote desktop, you would have to use something like VNC (I really like ultraVNC).

Port forward on the router, set a static IP on the machine (to prevent a random change locking you out) and then it should work. The only way I could see to wake up a wireless PC remotely is to get a networked powerstrip you can access via a webpage to turn on/off, and setup your PC to power on after power loss? (not sure if that will work). You also need a wirless card that offers prelogin support, or you need to enable auto signon.

yeah I wouldn'tve used default windows remote desktop anyways. too insecure.

you reccomend ultravnc?

I can hook up an ethernet cable to it and make it work.

i'm guessing
1. set bios to wake after power off and wake at X time each morning
2. set tightvnc to start up automatically
3. figure out the ip and forwarding?

do I need any hardware to enable the wakeonlan if its a mobo feature? At least I think it is.
