Step by Step TIVO Hacking

All I'm wondering is, can I use TIVO with, you know, free ware?

No idea, but as aggressive as they are about prosecuting folks using freeware, I'd be mighty careful.

TIVO could make a fuss about people modding their boxes, but since most folks are looking @ increasing storage rather than other things one could do with say a Direct TIVO box, they don't seem interested in bugging customers.

I've still got a new HD waiting for me to format/install it, maybe I'll have time tonight.

I got a series 2 40 hour Tivo and replaced the 40 Gig drive with 2 120GB WD 7200 RPM 8MB cache drives for a total of 240GB of storage. The thing now reports "284 hours" recording time available 🙂

Fortunately, there's lots of good sites with instructions on how to mod your tivo.....

The only thing is, now I have a 240GB tivo working great, but I've discovered that I really never use more than one or two hours of recording time anyway -- the rest is a waste. Perhaps I should look into selling the modded tivo. A 'regular' 40 hour one goes for $150 or so... I wonder what I'd get for the 240GB version.

Are 7200 RPM HD's ok to put in a DVR?

What about noise, heat and long term reliability issues?

I'd recommend getting a 5400 rpm hard drive, but 7200 won't be that noticeable. It's hardly that much louder than a slower speed drive.

TiVo not only tolerates "hacking" their hardware for better networkability and storage, they practically encourage it. 😛

Stealing/circumventing subscription, OTOH, is something they don't.

I've called Tivo before and the impression I get is that they actually encourage tinkering such as adding storage and network cards that support downloading their guide data through the net, because they pointed me toward http://www.9thtee.com/ .

This is kinda silly. Unless you're trying to preserve recordings your best bet is to e-mule a virgin image and just MFStools it to your drive, it's quick and easy.

I just set up a buddie's TiVo with airnet, complete with a little antenna on the back. Worked great. 🙂

Waiting for them to be <$100 w/ free program guides. Might be a while, but, that's what I'm waiting for.

You might as well just get a DVR from your cableco if they offer one. They're no where near as good as Tivo in terms of quality, interface, usability or features (except for dual tuners...), but they're cheap!

I used those instructions to upgrade my TiVo from a 40GB HD to a 40GB HD and an 80GB HD. Also used the upgrade parts sold at Weaknees. Very easy to use and great instructions.

Can't wait to see what they do when the HD DirecTivos come out. 🙂
