Step away from the grill. You don't know what you are doing.

Camping trip. I spent a full hour starting and tending the fire to cook with, this is gonna be good eats - brats, burgers, steaks cooked over an open fire with oak wood. It's a group of 7 guys, 6 seasoned outdoors men and the 1 new person who's idea of camping is bringing along his huge hotel on wheels camper.

So fucking camper Jackass wants to grill over his portable propane grill because 'it's taking too long to get the coals ready'. Since we all paid for the food it's all good...I'll hold back the alpha male qualities...go right ahead fucking camper jackass. But, those brats we've all been looking forward to take about 25-35 minutes to cook over a medium heat. Keep them away from the flame to avoid being burnt and undercooked. You don't just throw them over direct propane flame and burn the crap out of them.

10 minutes later fucking camper jackass pulls burgers and brats off his precious propane grill. DUDE!!!!! Did I not tell you those brats take a GOOD 25 minutes to be fully cooked? "But look, they're all black on the outside. That means they're done." fucking camper jackass says. The rest of the group mumbles "fucking camper jackass, those things ain't done."

Step away from the grill. Just step away.

Brats were raw on the inside, burnt on the outside.
Burgers were burnt on the outside, cold and raw on the inside.
Steaks were burnt on the outside, cold and raw on the inside.

He did not cook the rest of the trip. Damn Camper Jackass.

Meh, once the "griller" puts the meat on the grill, you leave him alone. No backseat grilling.

I hate crap like that... Cooking meat over the campfire is part of the fun of camping, and tastes amazing when done right. Even if he had done a decent job cooking on the grill, cooking over propane can be done at home, unlike cooking over a campfire.

I personally like brats a little burnt. But 10 minutes doesn't seem nearly long enough.

You are a savage. Steaks are supposed to be warm and red in the middle.

When i was little i used to cook on the grill all the time. I knew how to cook way better than adults, yet they would come up to me telling me how to grill.

Similar. Dude! These things are friggin raw, we TOLD you they weren't done yet. Brats take at least 25 minutes.

We wound up throwing them on the grill over the fire to finish them but the damage was already done and that incredible cooked over open wood fire taste could not be had.

I SAID I was a savage. I'm comfortable with that.

And be careful, us savages are known to club people with tire irons when they tell us how to cook our steaks ;)

My Dad is like that. My Mom likes everything well...well..well done. The rest of us are medium/medium rare kinda people.

Instead of putting her stuff on early and letting it cook longer, he puts everything on at the same time and just pulls our stuff away from the heat. But still on the grill drying out.

Ever freaking time he says "yeh, that should have come off earlier".

No Dad, it should have went on later.

*sigh*

I've put up with that for years. But a son just can't relinquish the grill from his Dad...especially if it's your Dad's grill.

I also tend to undercook brats, and end up having to put them back on the grill a lot of the time. Mainly b/c I like my burgers pink and my steaks red, and am paranoid of overcooking those. Undercooked brats are nasty looking in the middle... no way I would eat that.

man this is like those fools that cry about not having their own microbrew beer.

Wouldn't you think if you were such the man of the grill your friends would be having you do it more?

I know everyone has me cooking and I'd rather just sit and drink/hangout.

I will say many get a $1000 weber and suddenly think they are king of the grill. They quote grilling vs BBQ lines, talk dry vs wet sauce, sweet vs sour, etc...

You end up looking towards a feast and end up with a turd.

I usually do all the grilling.

but in groups there is always that one idiot that claims to know more then he does. he is the type you talk about. has a $600 grill, $60 extras (tongs, spatula etc) and talks up a storm. yet when it comes to actually useing the damn thing he has no fucking clue.

he always knocks my little $60 webber and $2 tongs. they get the job done and my steaks are usually perfect. usually don't get the outside as seared as some people like.

reminds me of a story heh. My future brother-in-law decided to have everyone over for steaks, burgers and hot dogs. Great! about time the lazy bums feed us instead of the other way around.

we go over. he has a BOX of steaks from walmart. ok no problem i have had some that were ok.

then he goes out to start the fire. he uses half a fucking bag of kingsford. Then puts the steaks on for like 8 minutes each side!

they were like beef jerky. it was funny as hell.

It took me a long time but I finally figured out the 3 main keys to success:

1. Sear it then get it away from the flame on medium heat.
2. Have patience, dont rush the process.
3. If you think it is going to be done in 2 minutes from now....take it off now or you'll overcook it.

Get some johnsonville brats (not those grey clay things), uncooked, put them over an open fire or webber, cook over medium heat for 25-30 minutes. Serve on bun with mustard.

You'll change your mind.

It goes from bad to worse with the mustard.
