Depends on how you view progress. If this becomes a standard treatment, it is less likely that macular degeneration will be selected against.

You do realize that natural selection of humans does not work as well in modern societies. In fact, its effects have been lessened for thousands of years, at least since we started providing care and sustenance for our less-abled members (like the Neanderthals did).
