Bush just allowed and will approve federal funding on the currently existing stem cells. He is to create a counsil on the stem cell research. Thoughts?

I congratulate the President on this excellent comprimise. I believe that stem cell research has great potential, but MUST be watched and monitored closely. I was afraid that the President would shoot down the proposition. His solution is perfect IMHO.

I was also impressed by his speech. President Bush is by no means the speaker the President Clinton was; however, President Bush did a great job with the speech.

My grandmother died of cancer. My great uncle has diabetes. While the research is too late for my grandmother and most likely too late for my great uncle, I pray it will help others.

He is doing everything HE can to help research! He said he was completely &quot;pro life&quot; in his campaign. If he went complete pro-stem cell research now it would be complete political suicide, unless he ran as a Democrat in 2004!

me and sponge are on the same page here, political suicide!!!!!!!, who cares were talking about curing parkinsons, helping paralyzed people walk again, fixing brain damage, that piece of crap Bush is putting his political career ahead of all that, i don't think thats very pro-life

I would think this is as pro life as it gets. The enbryos he says can be used are the ones that where going to be discarded,as in flushed down the disposal. His pro life stance is not in peril,but right wing wackos are put in there place.

I am totally for stem cell research (as long as human cloning is NOT involved). I just think that this is the best we could have expected to have received from the President tonight.

I thought I read somewhere that stem cells don't necessarily need to be taken from embryos, but can be taken from the placenta right after birth. That could possibly kill some of that pro-life controversy, but I'm not sure how accurate that was, but thats what i turned in for a college report .

some companies, like STEM, don't use embryonic stemcells at all, they take their stemcells from bone marrow and the placenta, bush better give them a lot of cash because they have nothing to do with killing any life

OK. I attend the University of Dayton. It is one of the largest Catholic Universities in the nation. I hear very biased views all the time as about 70% of the students are Catholic. I myself was &quot;born&quot; Catholic and was baptized; however, I do not, and have never, attended church, so I am hardly Catholic. Many of the people [students&amp;staff] view stem-cell research as a very 'immoral/wrong' thing to do. These are the people that elected Bush.

Exactly. This descision was not wether to support stem cell research or not, but rather how to support it without going going back completely. After all Cheney supports its, so it was obvious he was going to fund the research to some extent (like there ever will be a decision in this administration that is against what Cheney wants). It amazes me that people could be impressed so easily about his political positioning, just b/c of the sheer number of unpopular and stupid moves he has made in the last 6 months. It makes you wonder if he supported several ultra right wing policy, and then supported one moderately right wing policy, would he hailed with achievement. lol.

Moving on, I assume everyone heard his diatribe on human cloning, harvesting these clones for their bodily parts and so on. This is one of the dumbest things i've ever heard. If you clone yourself (and it's succesful), the clone will be born a baby and grow at a normal human rate. You'd have to wait for like 15-20 years for any of the organs to really be useful, and you'd never kill a person to take their organs. It's not like your going to house this baby in a jar and take it's organs when need be. It will be a baby, with the same basic inherited characteristics that you have. however, it will not have the same personality necessarily because of it's surroundings as a child and the generation that it grows up in. the people that view clones as hunch backed little demon helpers are not living in anything like a real world. This was actually one of the few parts in his speech where Bush looked stupid to me (usually there are a lot more).

Scientists HAVE to pursue stem cell research because the possible gains are so great. Ethics are one thing and religion is another. We cannot allow religion to hold back the advancement of science and the dignity of the human race. This is an ethical question, not a religious one...the possibility of making huge medical discoveries from stem cell research is simply too overwhelming to simply say &quot;no&quot; because of some religious constraint. I say &quot;full speed ahead&quot; and let's do this for better lives.
