If he signs with a major league team, Matsui would become the third Japanese position player to go to the majors following Suzuki and Tsuyoshi Shinjo of the San Francisco Giants.
Suziki did well but Shinjo sucked Sushi this year! Matsui did hit a Dinger 511' which is a Bomb. They also face more curveballs over there so he might be able to do well here in the States.

Ichiro tailed off big time at the end. :frown:

Sabean is no doubt a very good GM, but WTF was he smoking when he acquired Shinjo to bat leadoff for the Giants? That roster move alone disproves Magowan's subtle early insult to Dusty Baker calling the Giants a World Series-caliber team. In my book, the Giants overachieved while the NL powerhouses stumbled in the postseason.

The funny thing is I don't think the Yankees can afford Matsui! Sure, they have bank but they were even rumored by ESPN to be interested in dumping Posada's contract through a trade. That luxury tax is gonna destroy the imbalance the Yankees have over everyone else.

Sadly, ESPN also opined that the A's have little hope of resigning Tejada to a long-term pact, and another slim chance of keeping Chavez either. But we'll see what happens with the revenue sharing. You figure Beane is going to try his damn best to keep that infield left side together.

Yankees are rumoured to be interested in dealing Posada because his power numbers and avg. have tailed off, and he's in the first year of a $52 million 5 year deal. Due to the luxury tax and collective bargaining agreement, it makes it a bit risky to keep a guy making that much money if his numbers will just keep going down.
