Steering's going south in the cherokee...

Going to work today I started hearing this rattling and every once and a while I could feel a shake coming from under the hood. When I got to work I popped open the hood and found that the steering pump was shaking and leaking fluid with very fine bits of metal in it. Wonderful...

So obviously I need a new steering pump, is it guaranteed I need a new box also? So far I've only seen metal in the liquid coming out of the pump, the liquid insidethe reservoir looks squeaky clean. The particulate I have seen so far has been EXTREMELY fine, no visible flakes, it just makes the fluid leaking out glisten in a metalic sort of way. I was considering doing my best to flush the box and run the fluid coming out through a rag to see if any metal got into the box. At least in my crazy thinking, if the fluid coming out of the box is relatively particulate free I would think that the box is still good.

If I do flush the box, what fluid should I use? Getting a gallon or two of power steering fluid just to flush it seems like a bit of a waste.

I would flush it with either ATF or AW32 or AW64 (hyd oil)... Being a steering box it will take alot of abuse and most likely be ok... You might go by a hyd shop and see if they would sell you a couple of gallons from their bulk tank and they might even just give it to you...? If you were close I`d get ya a 5 gal bucket of it... BTW powersteering fluid is AW64 although some have different color added so they can call it "special"...😛

Back to the steering box I`d check it every few days for a while (couple of months) for any slack that starts to appear and if none then let it eat...
