Steering wheel & glare

I get a crazy amount of glare from this pseudo chrome piece on my steering wheel. I was thinking electricians tape but decided that would look crappy. Any suggestions that are reasonable to do?

cover the chrome with tape?

I was thinking that but I fear a cheap looking & gooey mess the first hot day.
Why do they do crap like this in cars?

Because poor people seem to think chrome makes things look more expensive.

Vinyl wrap

I was think vinyl wrap as well, but I think matte plasticdip might be easier to apply compared to carefully cutting vinyl. Most of the work will be masking off the edges during painting with a brush and plasticdip is removeable if you mess up.
