Hey guys, I'm not a mechanic or terribly familiar with mechanical stuff, so bear with me. I have a new to me 2005 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT (5.3L) with 138k on it. When I was towing my horse trailer on the interstate at the beginning of this month, the hitch ball lost its nut and the trailer, with my weanling horse in it, torqued my truck all over the interstate until it broke away and went spinning off into the median. First, thank God the trailer and truck didn't flip. Second, thank God no one hit the trailer. My horse had a small cut. The trailer had two sheared axels. There was no visible damage to Bob, my truck, but when I made a sharp turn in the first couple days after the accident, I heard a kind of moaning sound. (Yeah, I get it--he was sore after the accident. So was I.). The truck would also start to hang when turning. I drove from Iowa, where the accident occurred, to PA and had it looked at because I'd go to pull out of my driveway (turning towards the passenger side and into the driving lane) and the truck would get stuck and hang. I'd have to turn the wheel as if I was making small trailer adjustments. Shop said it was the upper intermediate shaft, but from what I've read about those symptoms, they involve clunking and shimmying. I drove 1,000+ miles with no shimmy or clunk, never heard a clunk only a moan, and it would hang on sharp turns. I get Bob back tomorrow and I'm not convinced that he's fixed. Shop told me that was the problem, but do you guys have other ideas? I'm justifiably nervous about driving him and towing without being completely certain it's all fixed. A shop had determined the proper drop for my trailer and installed the ball less than two months before my trip. I should have flipped when all I saw was my trailer in my crew cab and passenger windows. I was going 65. Then I had to tow my trailer to a repair place where they found two sheared axels. And I drove home 1,000+ miles with loose steering linkage. I just don't need to tax my guardian angel any further. So your ideas are appreciated because if the shop missed something, I want it fixed before I ever get behind Bob's wheel again. Thanks!
