Ok, it has been some time since I initially looked at a video card to purchase. I currently have a 7800GT that runs fine, but knowing about some of the newer games that will be coming out, (not necessarily the DX10 games) I'm going to need some more muscle than what this one is putting out.

I'll have around 350-400 for a vid card. I really don't care if it's an ATI or Nvidia or not. So long as it performs with no hassle I could care less.

What do you guy think would be a good buy? Or should I just wait a bit longer and squeeze everything out of the card I have now?

Thanks!

What res you play at ? You could go with the GTS, but you may be bottlenecked.

I have a 19" lcd. Native res is 1280x1040

I like to keep the games around the native res.

If I were you, I'd upgrade my Processor to an X2 and call it a day. If you later on feel your 7800GT isn't enough, then get something higher. At your resolution you don't need anything too fancy.

WAIT for till next month or what you buy now will loose its value too quick but if you must upgrade then get a 8800gts. You don't need to upgrade the Processor as it will not do much for performance increase in high res but do get another 1GB of ram.

Your only sensible options are:

Nvidia Geforce 8800GTS 320MB
Nvidia Geforce 8800GTS 640MB

Checking out the prices and that 8800GTS is right at 389 on Newegg.

I may just do this one!

I think you'd serve yourself better upgrading your CPU and your RAM to 2GB. Your current card should perform well to play most any game that at resolution.

Its easier to save up ~$200 afterwards to get a new CPU. Let the man get his monster video card and kick some...yeah.

Yes, I thought about this too. Unfortunately, that's more money. CPU, mobo, ram... that will most likely end up costing more. I could stick with a socket 939 cpu, but I'll end up replacing that even sooner than a vid card perhaps.
6 one way, or half a dozen the other. It's a wash I guess.

An 8800 video card will last you a long time. The card is a monster and covers the tech needed for Directx10.
