Steelcase Think vs Aeron vs Ikea

I am planning to get a new chair, but I don't know which one yet. Tried an Ikea chair this morning (the JERRIK) and it feels OK and looks very pretty with the plywood accents, but I want something a bit more adjustable and with a full back support.

So, I have always wanted an Aeron chair, and I also heard some buzz about the Steelcase Think, and I like the less cluttered look of it. I am also open to more suggestions if you have come across a chair that sits well.

I would like the keep the price strictly below 1000 shipped + taxed (8.25% NYS).

So chair geeks(if such thing exists...), what do you think?

btw I am 5'11" tall and 150lbs, if that helps...

Update: Just so you know I decided to buy a Aeron from a local seller off ebay. I tried them both and have to say the Aeron feels a lot better and less mechanical. The think has the most comfortable back among them and Leap on the other hand is all business, but the recline is too mechanical, the aeron is a lot smoother, and overall higher quality feel.

Well, I can help you - I have an Aeron at home, and furnished my company's offices with Steelcase Think and Leap chairs (about 9 in total). The Think is quite flimsy, so I don't like it. The Leap is much better, and very good looking in the right configuration (tan leather base/wine-red back/chrome metal parts) and quite comfy too. Actually, I prefer its shape over the Aeron.

However, the Aeron has the highest quality, and you just can't beat the mesh on it. So much nicer to seat on than anything else IMHO. I don't like the fact that it's so restrictive - you can't really move around - but if you like to sit in a healthy way, it's the best.

So Think is not good, Leap is the most comfy but the Aeron is all in all superior.

(Do check the Leap Lounge though. It's a beauty!)

Thank you for the recommendation guys. Is there any counterfeit chairs? I found this website on CL and it sounds too good to be true (http://www.designerseating.com/). I wouldn't mind going to their "showroom" in Brooklyn but I just can't identify if they are fake or not without any knowledge of the real ones (Only seen and sat on the Aeron but it's like 4 years back...)

We have Aeron chairs where I work, and personally they are over rated. I was dumbfoundeed when I learned they spent around a $1000 for each of them too.

5'11"/150lbs? :Q Do you EAT? As in food. Not tofu...but real, red meat?

Seriously...have you ever had a real hamburger and fries?

I'm 6'1" and the skinniest I've ever been was 185 pounds...and I looked like death.

Dude, you don't need a chair; you need a bamboo pole thru your spine to hold you upright.

50 dollar office max/depot special.

unless you are filthy rich, or have some medical condition or pains, buying a 1000 dollar chair is just dumb.

Apparently the State of Cali spends this much on all of its employees.

Holy moly, another one of them skeletons! :Q R U sure your scale is functioning correctly?

You're 6'2", 170 pounds..."skinny" is putting it mildly, IMHO. I'm a little overweight ATM, but I've got 50 pounds on you. I know what I look like at 210 pounds....I look pretty good IMO.

I just remember me at 185 and holy skinny bones moses...I looked bad.

Please buy Steelcase. Us Michigan people would appreciate it.

I drove by their headquarters not that long ago, it looks so sad and lonely...

keep in mind that most aeron owners are fanbois
Test them out yourself before making the investment.

you realize herman miller is based in Holland, only about 30 miles from the steel case headquarters in Grand Rapids?

I used to have an Aeron chair at work but I changed it for something else as it gave me lower back pains.

I've sat in an Aeron and I have a Mirra at home...at work we have all Steelcase chairs and they're very impressive too. I'd go with the Steelcase, but I'm glad that I only paid $150 for my Mirra :D

I own an Aeron and am not a fanboy. I do think they are quality chairs and can sit in one for 10 hours without any discomfort (the defining factor on whether a chair is worth keeping). I will say that after 4 years of ownership, the mesh in the back has begun to rip and will need to be replaced - I haven't started the process on this yet so I can't comment on it. The metal frame itself is virtually indestructible and will actually damage other furniture if you slide your chair into things.

Hi All,

I found this thread by google. I am in research for ergonomic chair and I am about to buy the Aeron soon. The price of it though is extremely high and I too wanted to make 101% sure my spent money is worth it. I bid a few times for "pre-owned" Aerons on eBay, but was always outbid.. Keep in mind the two sellers on eBay who claim they are both authorized dealers of Herman Miller are actually the same person. All of his listings are private. I strongly believe that he is bidding on his own listings and he gives + feedbacks to himself.. I am trying to find a deal for used fully loaded Aeron in the $400 range shipped. That may be is impossible :(.
