Looking to have 1" thick steel plates milled, and I was wondering where I can have this done. Making a german style* PC case (BTX form factor) custom. Want keyed bevelling on a total of 24 sides (6x4) and a total of 8x12cm holes drilled into them (the plates). It is currently a 6'x4'x1" steel plate (don't know what kind of steel exactly)

ultra strong* Will have details done by end of today.

You need a machine shop. It's going to cost a good bit. 1" steel? You know this thing is going to weigh like 50lbs?

You must be insane if you want 1" steel plates for a PC case. Are you expecting to get nuked? And BTW, any machine shop can do that for you.

50lbs? Now that's almost funny.........a moderately built system in an Antec Sonata case (2 opticals, one hd, mb, cpu, ps) weighs in at over 35 lbs. I'd not hesitate to think of this system, no matter its small size, weighing more like 75 lbs. or more. 1" steel plate is HEAVY!

So what the devil are you going to do with this? Or do we have to wait till the end of the day.

Shoot at it? Server in Iraq? Maybe you're afraid of theft? Maybe you're going to put an LCD/pc in your truck, and you need the case to hold the assend down in the snow. Maybe you're going to hook a GPS to it and drop it out of a plane, then have a scavenger hunt to find it. Finders keepers! Or maybe you're going to somehow hook it to your cpu cooler and make a frying pan. That's a good one. I don't know, maybe you're going to do some hardcore 3d acid etching on the side. Oh lasers, maybe you're going to mount a laser to it.

A two-foot square piece of 1" thick steel weighs about 160 pounds, if that gives you some idea.

Oh, holy crud, I thought it said 6 inch X 4 inch. Not feet. 1" steel plate should be around 40lbs per sqft, which is what I was thinking when I said 50lbs

Oddly enough, I haven't even seen this thing yet. I'm just in the design stage now, the plate is at a relative's house. The entire plate is indiana at the moment, he says its over 200lbs. Obviously I am not going to use it all, as I do have to pay him for what I take (scrap value)

I'm a machinist, and would be happy to help you out. Drop me a line and we'll figure out a way to get this done. Local shops like ours charge like $40-$50 /hr . usually with a minimum of like $100. I am much cheaper........

That case is going to way well over 400 lbs if you use the full sheet, just fyi.

A nice heavy small object. Own a forklift to move it around? You may not be thinking clearly but 500lbs is a LOT of weight and if you think you will be even able to lift that into your house and you aren't a practicing member of the worlds strongest man competetions you might want to reconsider. The size of plate you idicate is a typical plate for covering roadway excavations at night, those plates don't get moved by human hands. In fact if you tried you would likely severe fingers. Also a weight of that size (ie compact) would likely do damage to any flooring it touches (except slab on grade, which it would probably only crack).

Kudos on the project though, if you go ahead keep us updated, I always love a good laugh.
