Steam's VAC Anti-Cheat blows!

I'm disappointed in Steam.

I have been a hardcore Counter-Strike Source gamer since it came out in 2004.

Recently, I have noticed more and more hackers.

So 2 weeks ago, I decided to try one out. I downloaded a hack easily found on the internet and tried it out.

It worked like a charm. I still have not been detected by Steam.

Steam's VAC (Valve Anti-Cheat program) warnings and messages keep saying how powerful it is. I'm frustrated that the hacks downloaded easily on a website are not detected.

Anyways, I'm not gonna play the game anymore. Damn hackers ruined it.

BTW, I got the hacks Link Removed

Please do not post links to hacks used in online multiplayer environments.

I see a hacker maybe once a month on my three favorite servers (which are well-admin'ed), and I play a LOT of CS:Source (Steam says 50 hours in two weeks, but I've had to study for exams this last week). Who cares if they're not ruining your gameplay?

Besides, the hackers will always be ahead of the banning methods. But why would you risk your account just to try a hack? You're either lying or you have better things to do with your time and money.

It's all over the place, CSS, DOD, TF2, you name it.

One day cheating will be mostly eliminating via means of remote processing, but until then I honestly think the best gaming experience is a 'humanishly' clever bot. Not quite human, but won't pimp you. Problem is CSS requires a massive processor for a reasonable amount of AI opponents, but they're pretty damn smart opponents.

In the server I play in, usually the hackers last anywhere between 10 seconds and 10 minutes depending on the availability of the admin. It doesn't bother me at all, just go to spec. if your score is getting hurt. It is always fun to be the guy that is able to kill the hacker :)

the only thing that keeps a server fun are admins on duty, or a reasonable voteban system.
csers are too stupid to voteban when it requires more than 4-6votes it seems. anything more is useless, you get a couple votes and the rest of the clueless players can't get it together. csers don't know the meaning of teamwork obviously.

this is one aspect of valve i find dissapointing.

A surprising number of the servers I've been to don't even have votekick/voteban implemented. But, onto your post...

csers =/= valve

Just because there are dumb csers doesn't mean that it's Valve's fault. There are stupid gamers everywhere. I swear at least half the players I meet on a server don't even know how to talk... or read, for that matter.

One item I read concerning VAC was the devs included a variable time from when the cheat was detected to when the user was kicked, to make it more difficult for authors to determine what specific thing they did to trigger VAC.
I haven't noticed any obvious cheats in TF2, but stick to a handful of servers with active admins.

well i'm disappointed in valve because they don't seem to work on their anti cheat systems very much. they've had years but theres little progress.
the votekick/voteban/admin thing just puts the burden on players, and only catches the most obvious cheats. the general feeling i get from valve from since the cs 1.x days is general neglect on this issue.

I only really play on one server anymore. (Well, I play on a handful of servers all adminned by the same clan.) They're a pretty cool group of guys, and they monitor the servers pretty carefully.

Check out theelders.net. They've got CS:S, CS:S Gun Game and TF2 servers.

I did something similar to the OP a while back.

About a year ago I decided to see how hard it would be to cheat at CSS. Five minutes on Google and I had downloaded a walls mod and a radar mod which lets me see the entire maps and enemies on radar. Ten more minutes on Google and I had an aim bot that I could manipulate to target any hit box I wanted and make every other shot go somewhere completely different. I played that entire day on a pub to see how long it would take for me to be found out - well, after many hours of gaming no one found me out.

I uninstalled the cheats at that point (actually I had to reinstall CSS because it borked the game files). Cheaters really suck and ruin the game for everyone, but it's so easy to do and a smart person will never get caught as I found out.

These days I only play on one server and we are veterans of CS (some like me have been playing going on 10 years) so we can spot a cheater pretty easily. They are immediately banned and we move on. We have a nice group of regulars who keep the server tidy. I have given up playing anywhere else because the cheating has gotten out of hand.

That really sucks. Cheaters ruin multiplayer games big time.

Joint Operations is a good example. My roommate bought it a few weeks ago after all this time (he watched me play it in 2004 and 2005). So I reinstall it when he got it, we play, only to have so many total BS kills and crap that never could happen without cheats. Look at JO forums, see that Novalogic for whatever reason (didn't want to pay them?) drop Punkbuster. So whatever PB is there is like so outdated or whatever, because EvenBalance doesn't even list JO as a supported game anymore. So I google cheats about it, and in 2 minutes there was tons of cheats. Youtube videos showing what the cheats can do. No wonder we got killed so many times for reasons that couldn't be there without cheats.

So basically, that game is ruined now. I've had better luck on non official Nova servers since they don't record stats, and stats likely being a major reason people cheat.

It sucks that even big Valve and their VAC that it just isn't enough.

I was thinking how great it would be for a new company to come up with some great anticheat software. Basically what EvenBalance does, but as we all know just isn't good enough. I mean, to have some software to truly get rid of cheats would be worth a lot of $$. But I just don't think it is possible to really do. Anyway, any anticheat software out there now, the instant it detects a cheat, it should instaban their account/CD-key. Cheating is such BS... pisses me off tons.

Rediculous. You can't beat an aimbotter/speedhacker except by luck. 3 bullets in your head before you even moved your mouse.

Another thing that would help with valve games is if more servers enabled sv_pure.
Without it enabled people are free to use materials that allow wallhacks and these are not detected by valve.

Well, this is what you get if you play shit like Counter-Strike.

It's kind of like that Madden title that didn't work on the PSP a while ago - that's what you get for playing sports titles.

Sometimes shittiness is just inherent. With CS, the odds are immensely improved due to the popularity. I enjoyed it as a mod for HL1 up until beta 4, when it suddenly became their mission to ruin everything good about it. They peaked at 3.1 and should've just stopped there.

lol,

I've played bf2 since it was released, and i get banned from servers everyday for being "too good"

Because of my experience getting banned because other idiots on a server can't keep up with you, I tend to give people that seem unnaturally good at games the benefit of the doubt. There are people that just have a knack at some games. If i can kill 8 ppl in a row with an ak-47 in bf2 and still be kicking for more, even though it may seem like I'm unnaturally good, I just have a talent for the game.

It happens alot in cod4, let me tell you, i suck at that game. (I kinda hate it, because I own so badly at bf2, I don't enjoy getting owned in cod4, the gameplay seems like a totally different genre to me....) When someone seems to be just too good, I kinda remember that if this was bf2, i'd be the one with a 20-1 ratio, and thats why I suggest you, rather then assume ppl are hackers, embrace it and have fun trying to kill the seeming godly player.

If you ever are in the same position I am, I'm sure you'd agree with my philosophy.

EDIT: double post

and just because someone doesn't open-share their gaming philosophy, even though it may be the same as yours, doesn't mean they are coming from a non-understanding point - i don't want to start any arguments here, all im saying is that even though a person may be an admin, it doesn't excuse them

The best thing I did for myself in regards to CSS.

A) Quit taking everything seriously.

B) Got headphones. I get banned a lot because some admin can't believe I knew he was in front stairs and I just happenend to throw that nade at the right time, hax, ghosting blah. The metal sound the tells me he just slip stepped on the stairs when he was slow walking had nothing to do with it, lawl. In all serious, my headphones are a $7 radio shack special and they really helped my play years ago.

The actual people who are good you can tell, and then there are the blatants. And I just accepted the fact that right now, there are people hacking who are acting like they are God's gift to CSS and there's never anyway I can prove it. *Deep breath*, it's just game. Makes me somewhat angry, but they're only cheating themselves. All I have to do is leave, or spectate, make demos, write ip's down. Or just run at them with grenades in my hand......martyrdom for the win.

I suck at CS, and even I have been accussed of and banned for "hacking".

There are cheaters out there for sure...but people are so fucking paranoid about it they scream hacks every time some one pulls off a head shot.

In a sense, hackers have won. No one really plays the game since they're to busy obsessing over the possibility that one of the players has some cheats on. They probably do. And they're also probably team flashing and bleeding, blocking, playing beavis and butthead sounds over the mic, spraying pictures of dicks on the walls, calling each other racial slurs and abusing their admin powers. Welcome to counterstrike...and virtually every other online game out there.

I just play on a few servers that don't seem to absorb most of the abuse. If the game starts to suck, I move to another one. There's way to many servers out there to get upset.
