umm. ok. If you agree with him, tell me why it is so. Is he just some ignorant person that hates everything, or well informed behind the source code?

😕

EDIT: k now he's calling me a consumer whore for giving in to steam, and saying that since I have a Ralph's card (it's walking distance) and shop @ Walmart, I'm a mega consumer whore and I'm helping the middle class lose its ground.

ok I see where that's coming from, but wtf? ok.

if it's the biggest cover-up, and someone found out, it would no longer be a cover-up, no?

never heard of this before but they arn't going to find much on me. other than I am at anandtech to often....

go kick your hippy friend in the nuts and never talk to him again. Debating with them if fruitless.

edit:

sorry I thought I was still in off topic 🙁

well, ok but who doesn't.

but my primary question is what makes steam a full blown spyware? Isin't it just some sort of feedback? No feedback means less customer service, less information on how their software performs, less info on their userbase, etc etc....
I can probably see why he may see it as spyware..

in his logic, then, that means my computer loging into the internet is spyware. Since my IPs, search history, email etc, is all logged by the ISP and/or some other service and available to any law enforcement; then that means this appliance i call the computer is spyware! :Q

I can't stand Steam, but I wouldn't call it spyware. I think your buddy needs to quit watching conspiracy movies, and get out in the world some.

Is your friend referring to the survey? They asked people to participate in surveys a long time ago. If you clicked OK it would send information such as what video card you are using to Valve. They then used this to generate a massive report showing the trends in video cards / processors at the time of HL2's release which was actually quite interesting in showing how much behind the curve the great majority of people playing HL2 were. Most people viewed the survey as informative and I'd deffinitely take part in it again. It gives the developers a look into what hardware they are actually developing for.

I was definitely surprised by the results. My 6800 didn't seem so bad anymore!

He has steam and Battlefield 2142 confused.

Also....being a consumer whore for giving into steam??? I think its the opposite. I wish everything could be bought like with steam.

No need to apologize, it's still a perfectly valid post.

I think Steam is probably the best thing that has happened to the PC game scene in a while. I know most of us on ATOT are power users, but to the average computer user, Steam is a godsend. It gives users a single interface to manage multiple games, and game updates. You don't have to go searching first to see if a patch was released for your game, then a location to download it from. Steam automatically keeps games up to date (the games I've used through Steam anyway).

Not to mention if you lose your physical media for a game, you can simply download it if you register it with Steam.

completely agree. it was an innovative idea, and I really like it. It also gives at least some sort of recognition to independent developers. The whole concept is a great great idea.

I disagree, it's a service for naive fanboys. You get no copy, and always have to rely on them if you need to reinstall. Even if you buy the disks you don't have a complete copy. They control when and if you're allowed to install a game, not you. With games being tied to an account, they've taken away your ability to sell a game, trade it, give it away, or even let a friend borrow it.

You're potentially screwed if they go out of business. Valve is a one pony show, if thier next big game fails so do they, and most likely Steam along with it. All you have to do is look at all the other game companies that failed, there are hundreds of them. If you're behind a firewall you don't controll, college or work, you're screwed. If they decide to abbandon the game you're screwed, unless they let you download a complete copy, no gaurantee there. What abou a controversial game? They can change the content or even stop you from playing it again. Steam now owns you, and your game collection.

What about a buyout? What if EA or Microsoft wants the Half-life franchise? They buy Valve and Steam for it and scrap all the rest of the games. Game over, literally for your whole Steam game collection. Neither EA or MS has a very good history of supporting older games.
