Steam won't install?

My friend was trying to install Steam. He had it installed a long time ago, but it never worked. So, he tried installing it again. Here's the error he got:

"Another version of this product is already installed. installation of this version cannot continue. to configure or remove the existing version of this product, use add/remove programs on the control panel."

Steam, or anything related to it or Valve, does not show up in the add/remove menu. There are no steam or valve folders on his computer. We even deleted steam entries in the registry.

Anyone know what to do?

hmm... u've got me.... uh..... so it's for CS?

Counter Strike? My friend just wants to use Steam in general (HL2/CS/whatever else it has).

He even used Valve's guide on uninstalling Steam (manually, too). Still doesn't want to install.

I upgraded my ATI driver and Control Center today, and it wanted to install "Steam." I would not let it do so because I don't have a clue what it is or why I would need it. What does "Steam" do?

OK - I found it. Hoo boy, another waste of time and money.

"Steam allows users to purchase access to games through a digital distribution system. Instead of receiving a box, disc, or even CD key, purchased software is immediately attached on the Steam servers to the user?s Steam account (which is registered for free), from which it can be accessed and downloaded from anywhere that allows the use of the Steam client. Games can either be bought individually (with some exceptions) or as part of a ?package? of multiple games, if one is available, which will provide better value for money."

Looks look a gamer's version of iTunes.

Actually, steam is a pretty good piece of software and it has been around for a while. A lot of company's are jumping on board (most recently id software) so it has a good selection.

Don't knock it until you have tried it.

Well I wasn't knocking it - just being pragmatic. Since I don't game, period - what's the point of trying it?
