Steam too busy to let me play, not too busy to let me pay

For the past 3 days I haven't been able to download any games on Steam due to busy servers. I can appreciate that the servers will be somewhat congested with such amazing specials going on, but they should have been prepared before they started selling so many games for such great prices. It's hard to complain when I've purchased 5 AAA games for less than the price of one, but I do think it's kind of cheeky for them to take my money but not allow me to play my new games.

Over the night (UK time 10pm to 6am) I had no issue downloading over 20Gb worth via Steam.

Some of the games took me several attempts to "install the files" prior to download but nothing really horrible. Nothing that remotely describes your nightmare scenario.

Other than being a little slow, no problems here in the US.

I got busy servers about 5 times. Kept trying and eventually got through.

Change your location setting in the Steam menu.
I had Busy for UK, then I switched to Finland and was able to download, then I tried to download another game, and eventually when I switched to Benelux I could download that as well.

View -> Settings -> Downloads -> Download Region.

Thanks, Polish servers are downloading slowly but at least they're working.

I've been able to DL Torchlight and currently DLing Witcher

the Witcher DL has been slow to start, but it eventually does get going

Keep hammering it until your download starts. It worked for me and the last 4 games I got.

And WTF did you expect when they sell awesome games for 1/10th their value? Did you honestly think theres only handful of people on Anandtech who know about these deals?

I think the sale has been going much better than expected. Sometimes you just can't be prepared for something you've never seen before.

I've d/l about 8 games. A bit slow but not too bad. 18 More to go (these specials are so addictive)

I just got STALKER: Clear Sky and will probably buy Bioshock as well. ~50kb/s, not at all fast, but I'm still happy. :awe:

Yes, it was annoying, finally managed to finish downloading Medieval 2: TW.

Downloading at 4.0 MB/s here in New York at the moment. Blazing fast.
