Steam thinks I'm running 2 video cards...

Steam apparently thinks I have two video cards. Did my rig order itself another video card while I wasn't watching? *peek inside* No, I didn't think so...

I scrolled through it, and it doesn't specify what it thinks the phantom 2nd video card is.

Anyone else have problems before with Steam survey detecting more video cards than it should be detecting?

That would be odd if true. I don't have a motherboard that's capable of enabling the GMA if a video card is installed. I also never installed the drivers for it, and it's not visible under device managers. Unless Steam is doing it on the basis of the chipset alone. Either way, that's sort of inflating the survey's multi-GPU numbers (Nvidia/AMD must be pleased though :p).

its because windows detects both video outputs as a different card. check device manager . i'm assuming your card is the 8800 gts in your sig

If you mean the Display Adapters, there's only one listed in the device manager. I just had a thought though - I wonder if it thinks the Catalyst drivers I have installed are for a video card. Which would be highly ironic if that's the case, because when I tried to get in on this deal, I got rejected :(.

I suppose it's possible I just have some unusual combination of parts that are causing that mis-detection. But if it's not just me, I wonder what percentage of the supposed multi-GPU systems I've seen on previous Steam surveys really are that, and how many are actually "false positives".

That could be a problem, you may want to use driver sweeper or driver cleaner and get rid of any remains of the ATI drivers and see if steam will see two cards again.

Sorry, I wasn't really clear about that. The Catalyst drivers are for my TV tuner, so I do need them. It's just odd that it didn't qualify me as an "ATi customer" under the definition of that previous Steam promo offer, so I'm not convinced that's the cause of it.

nvidia also offers those two games now... as well as fraggle and a portal: first slice.

So pretty much ANYONE can get them for free (unless they have onboard video from intel)

steam thinks I'm running only one card, yet I have 2.

the latest hardware scanner is pretty pathetic. there are only so few people running SLI, if some of them are not even detected its no surprise why multi gpu systems are so few and rare...

Hey, thanks for the tip. I actually saw that offer previously, but ignored it since I assumed it just included the Portal demo, which I already have the full version of. Downloading Peggle and the two HL games right now.
