Steam sucks - unless you have FIOS, Steam really sucks

So I received FEAR2 in the mail today (I know, welcome to last year) and was very excited. Several days ago I had downloaded the 1.3 patch (330MB) so that I'd be all ready to patch it up and play.

As soon as it began installing, I saw the Steam installer popup and said "Oh shit."
Sure enough, 15 minutes later, after loading both DVDs, Steam starts updating the game...at 100KB/s download (my max download speed). I paused the DL and tried to patch manually: "FEAR2 is not installed. Installer will now exit." Didn't I just install it? Guess not.

I want to play the damn game now, not in "330MB/100KB/s = next frickn' week!!!"

That's all. I feel marginally better now. Thanks.

You should have read the box. Your fault. Next time, unplug your ethernet cable so it can't check for updates.

I bought it online; couldn't read the box. Paused the autoupdate and tried manually patching it; no go.

Woohoo. 11%. At this rate I should be playing in 90 minutes or so.

You must be one of those lucky 6MB/s download guys, right? /jealous

I've got Comcast at 12-15mb download speeds (9mb upload). They recently upgraded my connection.

You can't read?

:p

The box should say on the outside that it requires Steam or will install Steam.

Besides, what are you, on dialup?

He bought it online, so he didn't have the box when he bought it.

I recently purchased a game from D2D that apparantly required Steam. Yeah, that's how ridiculous it is now. There aren't warnings for this stuff. There are some good points to Steam, sure, but I'd rather avoid getting most games on Steam. I don't want to rely on a third-party program to make sure the game runs at all, especially if the internet goes down. My games should only be dependant on my computer.

No shit, you don't say?

1) Buy online
2) Receive physical retail box
3) Read box

Don't be a dumbass, Malak.

Besides, I'm giving MichaelD a hard time. Not you.

Now... back to MichaelD ribbing ... :p

If Spaceman endorses steam then you know it's good.

Plus I am déjà vu. Is it 2004-5 all over again and are we going to be seeing a rash of these types of threads? When I used Steam I had zero problems with it. Sold my account though, because I don't have much use for it on my netbook. :p

Thank you. Apparently, it's Nik that can't read; I only said I bought it online twice. :p

I agree with you; playing the game shouldn't be dependent on my internet connection. I own the software and a legal key; I should be able to load and play.

Wow, you both totally and absolutely fail. You bought it online, had it shipped to you. You can then read the box before installation. You can unplug your ethernet cable so it can't check for updates so you can play it.

Holy facepalm, batman. Am I talking to gradeschoolers?
