Ok, so I just made a STEAM account and I got Half Life 2 deathmatch and Half Life 2 Lost Coast Free almost immediately. (something about having ATI)

I thought holy crap amazing! Now I am downloading, and its been like 25 minutes and both games are only at 1% download. It will only show one downloads speed at a time, and on average it is 16KB/S! This is taking forever.

Should I pause one and get the other one first, and just play. I was thinking about pausing Half Life 2: Lost Coast, and just downloading Death Match for now. (heard it has good multiplayer)

In your settings to to the download tab and check the location, try picking one that is either closer to you or if that one is already selected try selecting the next closes one, restart steam and see how it goes then.

Steam almost always max's my connection out and at the very least usually DL's at around 1.3-2 mb/sec

Like I said, try selecting another location that is as close by as they offer.

I live in Arkansas, there is no option...

Either way try a different location in the US. I get max 1.4MB/s if downloading a full game, but usually like 700-900KB/s on the small 20MB updates.

I use the Chicago location, BTW.

I was getting 1.2mb/s spikes with Steam for a few secs now and then, and 1.0mb regularly, which is the max of my connection. Their servers are good if not getting hammered.

Ok I switched to Dallas and it is now going on average around 22KB/S... a little faster but good god I would at least like to be getting 50KB/S?:\

Steam download speeds are extraordinarily inconsistent. I frequently get >1MB/s and also frequently get <20kb/s. It's fucking ridiculous and shameful that Valve maintain such a shoddy system for paying customers.

I remember freshman year living at dorms... I got 10Mbytes per second down on downloads. It impressed the shit out of me.

My Steam DLs usually range from 1mbps to 2.3mbps. I use Verizon FIOS. There are a lot of variables involved though. Day of week, Time of day, server quality, ISP quality, bandwidth, etc., I find 6pm EST to 12am EST the worse time to DL. I try to DL before or after those times if I can.

I just randomly installed a game and it was easily maxing out my 16mbps connection, so it's definitely something on your end.

No, it's not "definitely something on [his] end". Valve maintains a content delivery network, something that works fine for you could be insanely slow for someone else. Hell, even if you're both downloading from the same server there's this thing called "the internet" between yourself and the Valve servers, and the graph of machines your data is routed through differs dramatically from person to person.

FYI it doesn't help when you live in NZ. I'm sure it makes it worse. I always get fast downloads in Steam but it's cus I'm in LA where there's a server right next to me to max out my connection.

Or more likely something inconsistent with your internet and the connection you will have with a valve server. There is only 1 server on NZ, but that only hosts a few things. Otherwise you get to connect to Australian servers somewhere.

The only time I have ever experienced issues is when a major release come out and their servers get hit like crazy. No company could keep up with that kind of demand, especially considering it only happens a couple times a year at most. All other times I max out my connection, every time I download something from steam.

----

The question here is, what kind of internet does this OP have? If he just did a speed test and got 90kb, then his download rate is about right.

Nope, it's on his end not Valve's. You know when we told him to change his location and he set it to Dallas? We can do that too you know. I'm getting 300 KB/s from Dallas. :awe:

Umm, no.

He tried 2 different Steam servers. Other people are using the same servers without problem. The problem is not on Steam's end. It's him or his ISP.

I would agree its either him, or his service. I'd call the ISP company and see whats up.

Just download the games when your at work or sleeping, I guess I'm assuming you do either or hopefully both.
