What other game do you know that provides constant updates - one every three weeks or so. New games to play without having to make another purchase - HL Deathmatch - Counterstrike Source - The Half Life Lost Level (coming soon) and Day of Defeat Source -Yeah it sucked for a minute when everyone and their mom was trying to validate HL2 on that first week of release but after that Steam has been great. I totally support Steam and I'm looking forward to new Half Life add ons and hopefully Half Life 3 sooner rather than later.

I like Steam, but then again, I don't like it. I'd rather have a hard copy of the game, but I had that option and decided to go against it. Steam has been flawless for me, and if it stays that way, I support it.

Like blurredvision, I had no problems with steam luckly. Even though spending over an hour to install a game is a bit of a hassle. Once you install all 5 CD-ROMs then your computer spends over 15-30 mins unlocking all the game files.

I bought HL2 online. Bad mistake.
Initially everything was peachy, and I played HL2DM/HL2 SP to the end.
Then reinstalled my OS (upgraded from 2k to XP), and my backup wouldn't work.
So then I let HL2 re-dpwnload, and then it kept on bugging out and having errors, so I couldn't use HL2/DM/CS:S.
In addition, Steam also kept fvcking up, using 100% CPU resources on start, so I had to disable it.
In the end, I uninstalled Steam and left that sh!t off my computer, since I'm not too bothered about not playing all 2 deathmatch maps, CS:S sucks and I've completed HL2 single player.

So yeah, it's a wonderful thing.
(I do like the principle though, I paid a small amount extra to buy through Steam, both to give Valve hopefully more money for the game, and to get the game sooner, I was playing on the morning of release :))

Never had any problems with it. I am amazed at how fast the games are downloaded. When I bought Silver I was playing within a few hours. Yeah I'd like a hard copy too, but I got my account, so I can play them anywhere.

I disliked being forced to move to steam from CS 1.5, but I can't say that I've had any problems with it since. Even moved HL2 to a new computer and didn't have any issues. Could be worse I guess...

Absolutely none - and let's hope it stays that way.

I do hope you played on WON with the same PC you have now. Then, and only then, would you realize how ass-tastic of a job they did vis-a-vis the fast rendering of the game engine.

Well actually, any game with a good development studio has constant updates, if the game needs them. HLDM isn't a new game, it's something that wasn't finished before they released HL2. CS was always free as it is more or less a mod. DoD:S does cost more, you have to buy a higher version of HL2 to get it, so you do actually pay for it.

What other games give you is the ability to play the game without a 2nd app. They never tell you they are too busy to let you play. They don't require an internet connection to play a single-player game. Steam actually slowed down HL2 and CS:S which was proven in loading speed benchmarks a long time ago.

Getting updates has been easy for years, most games I play have one click buttons to update. Although personally I prefer having the patch in file so I can back it up, makes reinstalling easier. There is another app that is twice as usefull, uses less than a quarter of the resouces, never stops you from playing the game, and can auto-download patches for you too. Nobody needs steam, and most don't want it. It's a terrible app.

I havent had a single issue with the application or with its delivery of the products it supports. The only thing I find annoying the way it handles off-line play.

Exactly.

I see some people are still on modems... That sucks.

Actually I'm on 100 Mbit, but I fail to see what that has got to do with anything here?

Steam is an improvement, I hope more game makers adopt the concept. The only time here's even a hint of a problem is when a new Update is released. It can take hours to even start to download it. Not much different that the pre-Steam days though, except with Steam I don't need to hunt down alternative download links which may be too busy anyways.

That said, what's really bugging me are the Hitboxes. I'm just a hair away from never playing CS:S again and if DoD has the same issue I'll be royally pissed.
