Highlights are :
1 cpu = 40% , 2 cpu = 49%
Intel 63%, AMD 36%
xp 32bit = 68%, vista 32bit= 23%, vista 64bit= 6%
Most common video card NV 8800, 12%
People using sli/crossfire = 2%

I think there is a mistake in the 16:9 display size area. It is showing 27" monitors as the most common. That really doesn't match the other areas cost wise.

The rest is pretty much in line with what I was thinking was the average gamer.

Good to see dual core CPUs out stripping single core chips. I am surprised, though, that Vista 64's percentage is so low. I figured it'd be higher.

I share in your surprise.

With Vista 64 emerging as the OS platform of choice for gamers and 4Gb gaming systems becoming the norm, 6% seems very low.

I'm guessing that number will go up a lot after the holidays.
With the economy the way it is people aren't going out and buying new pc like they did.

Any idea if the hardware survey is international? I know when I went to India every other internet cafe was loaded with kids playing Counterstrike 1.6 on old shitty machines. Granted everything is pirated over there, but 1.6 is free. I wonder if they use steam or just pirate the game based on principle. I am not sure if they played on lan or the internet though.

They used to show the actual number of systems for each category not they just show percent.

and greatest number of people have 27" 16:9 display size... bs

NVIDIA GeForce 9500 +0.56%
NVIDIA GeForce 8600 -0.13%

looks like all the confusion with the renaming works :p

Oh geez, all those people trying to game on 7300 cards...

(Of course, the number of people still running the FX5200 is mind-boggling.)

Oddly enough, 56% of people have more than 2GB of RAM. I wonder how many people are running XP 32 bit with 4GB of RAM and don't know the difference?

Also, I find something odd of the prevalence of 27in displays. Seems like 20 or 22 inch displays would be the most common given their cheap cost.

I got halfway through saying that "Gamers like me that use 47" HDTV's as PC monitors probably boost up that 27" figure" then I managed to stop myself.

17" is more realistic than 27" however it is probably between 19" and 24". My theory would be 19" or 21" since they seem to be more mainstream desktop computer style sizes for the Average Joe Public.

Do we have to do anything to be included in this survey or does Steam automatically take your system details through its program? I think this kind of survey is fantastic when used with a huge sample of machines worldwide and if I am not contributing, I would like to.

Agreed. Whatever your feelings are on Vista...I don't understand why when switching to a new OS you wouldn't also make the jump to 64bit...its not like that 4 gig barrier is some kind of pie in the sky thing anymore.

I suppose a lot of prebuilt dells and stuff might come with vista 32 loaded though.

As for the 27" monitor...most common widescreen LCDs are not actually 16:9 aspect ratio...they are 16:10. Perhaps whoever assembled the data assummed that 16:9 was the common aspect ratio.

In the minority here for the most part. 8GB ram, 67" screen, 64bit Vista, and using ATI :D

I'm curious - does it count HT-enabled chips as two processors? Considering there is a pretty big difference between two cores and two logical processors.

edit: Oops, says "physical cpus". Duh.

More like the stoneage. ;)

My oldest machine is 3ghz C2D with 2GB 1200mhz DDR2 and an 8800gt. The other two are leagues beyond that.

Meh, I got it 3 years ago just before C2D came out (absolute genius). I'd like to upgrade, but not really employed and don't want to dig into savings.

The problem with that is that we tend to see things from the techie side.
Most people don't know what a quad core is, hell they don't even know what a core is.

I'm still running into people that when I tell them their computer needs more memory , they tell me , well I don't have that many programs installed.

ROFL!!!!

This is a pet peeve of mine.

As for Quad Cores.... most gamers realise that they are a niche product and convey benefits in a select few games. Quite a few of the enthusiast side bought them because they were price/performance overclockers.

General public are buying Dual Core and they dont even understand what that is. Stores dont seem to be trying to push Quad Core onto people, taking it slow and getting them used to Dual first.

Once in a while, Steam will ask if you want to be a part of their survey. You fill it out manually.

I took it about a year ago, and they didn't even have my video card as an option (HD 3850). They had a whole slew of nVidia cards, but very few ATi cards, so that may be part of the reason that the GF 8800 is so prevalent. The monitor options were also a little strange, if I remember right.

32" 16:9 TV as monitor here, I probably got dumped into the 27" statistic as well

Christ, is 4GB really becoming the norm? I've been doing great with 2GB, so...

Same here. I've been wondering who the hell needs 4GB when most people are still using XP, and that can only use 3GB...
