I hope as consolation for screwing up, they will release info about the next Half Life game. Gabe do the right thing!

I have to admit, Im a little skeered on this one. This is my check card on Steam that goes straight to my checking account.

I think Ill be calling my bank tomorrow and getting a new check card and having this one deactivated.

I've yet to have a compromised credit card that wasn't easily handled by the credit card company - even if stuff happens, I'm sure they'll take care of it in short order.

So does anyone have info on a temporary Credit Card to use for online purchases
ie: Fund it with the amount needed to purchase something after that it is no longer valid?

I have a western union prepaid card. The main downside is they charge $1 to put money on the card and you have to go to a western union place to do it.
https://www.wuprepaid.com/wuprepaid/public/login.do

You just fill out your info on the site and they mail it to you then you can go to any western union office and add whatever amount you want for $1 . Use it anywhere you want that takes a mastercard.

Oh, I understand it now. See here.

Tells you to change your password but you can't. I can't access the user CP to change it. No matter what I click on it goes back to the message about the breach.

You should be able to. I just changed mine. Click in the upper left corner STEAM, then SETTINGS and then the ACCOUNT tab. There should be a tab for changing your password. Youll have to enter your current password then theyll send you a confirmation code to your email that youll have to enter before you can proceed.

steam forums, not steam client

I changed my password as soon as I got the message. After Sony's PSN breach back in the spring, I'm starting to wonder who to trust with my payment information. I always elect for Steam not to save my CC number for future purchases but I wonder how big of an impact that makes. Time to get me a prepaid credit card.

Man it pisses me off that these companies can't keep their shit secure. If they're unable to protect sensitive information then they shouldn't be keeping it in the first place. The amount of Valve ass-eating on the reddit thread is sickening - this is no different to the Sony breach, but as soon as people hear "valve" they act as if no wrong can be done.

I love Steam, but I'm seriously pissed off that yet another corporation isn't taking the security of my personal data seriously.

I'm guessing you've never heard it before but nothing is 100% secure. If someone wants something bad enough, they'll get it no matter how good the security is.

changing your steam account password requires you to use a code sent to the email linked to the account, so if the hackers have the password they cant change it and lock you out. they can log in and buy stuff from the store and raid any ingame backpacks/inventories. so at the very least change your password.

i dont keep my cc info on file, it isnt that big of an inconvenience to type it out.

i changed my pw 30 min ago with no problem.

If the information actually is encrypted as they seem to suggest then the card numbers themselves are likely safe. No amount of brute force hacking is going to crack any modern encryption scheme.

Changed my password, removed my credit card from Steam, and will change the forums password once I can get in.

I have free credit monitoring from my bank, my card is 0 liabilty for fraudulent purchasess, and I'll actually check my account daily for a week, then weekly like I do all my accounts.

I'm not really worried. Getting and using a credit card number is two different things, and my credit card company has called me twice about purchases to check it was me. Probably not perfect, but if someone in Russia tries to buy a hot tub...

Thanks Steam. Thanks for fu*king e-mailing me about something like this. Oh wait, you didn't. And I didn't see the news update/notice either. F*ck.

This is probably the only website/store where I have my CC info saved. Now I can't even find where I can delete it, but I guess there's no point since it's already been taken - not on my account page. It's my main CC. *sigh*

Wonder if I should notify my CC company while I'm ahead. At least Steam made it public.

Edit: Sent my CC provider an e-mail. Covers my ass in case their database "encryption" fails.
