Steam games (TF2, CSS) stalling for some reason

A few days ago I had trouble playing team fortress 2. The game would just lock up for a couple seconds at a time, occurring every 10-20 seconds. Thought it might be my mouse or something. I restarted and had the same thing. I tried counterstrike also and it also did the same thing. It's not like freezing where the whole screen freezes, everything in the game goes on normally except I can't move at times. Not sure why this has happened all of a sudden, but somehow it's probably related to steam as I haven't had any trouble like this with anything else. Any ideas? These games used to run fine with no problems, nothing updated and I didn't change any settings. Thanks.

It seems like it. Ping is fine, and i've tried lots of different servers, but i guess it could still be a connection issue.

Reinstall steam?

It's not lag either, the game just stops reacting to what I'm doing for moments at a time. I can see others move around fine. If it were lag spikes everyone would freeze along with me. Feels like a lag spike though, but it's just where I can't move. Also if it were lagging I would be able to navigate through the menus still, look in the console, etc. When the game stalls, it won't even let me bring the console up, like my computer loses connection with my mouse/keyboard here and there. Kinda hard to explain :p

Some of the new Nvidia drivers were doing this to me. It took 3-4 different drivers for me to solve this.

fabump. Tried reinstalling video drivers so hopefully that'll fix it, though I played with the same exact video drivers before without any trouble so I think this problem will keep happening.

bump again. I guess I'll try to reinstall steam if no one else has any idears. I've noticed others have similar problems since Steam released an update on april 1st. Steam never tests their updates and just waits to hear back on problems people are having, then they'll get another update out to fix those problems in a month or so :p - Hopefully that's the case again here.

Ahh I'm bored. Steam games don't work right, and other games I was playing have suffered a big slowdown when I updated DirectX. I wish I could attribute DirectX as the culprit for Steam games stalling, but TF2/CSS were messed up before I installed the newer DirectX. I can only play so much Wii :p

i've read about this problem before, my brother had to reformat just to get his game playing back to normal, he installed anti virus programs and the problem came back. thing is though he disabled the anti virus before reformatting and that didn't solve anything before. if you have any anti virus running i strongly suggest uninstalling it to see if that's the culprit. FYI he had Avast and some Spybot spyware thing.

Well I do use Avast all the time and Spybot now and again, but that's always been the case. Dunno, might try it. Thanks.

ropeadope !!! i have exact same problem as you !!!!! i sent you an e-mail please respond to me, i love playing CSS and your the only one on the internet i found that has same problem, we both have an ATI card, i use x850xt AGP and i use avast anti virus and i installed direct x not long ago too, i get exact same problems in steam games as you, we must keep in contact until one of us has solved this problem! i have a feeling it might be the new steam update you speak of because i checked every other game i have thats not steam related and they work fine, its only steam games !!!!! like deathmatch and CSS both of those stall for me. Maybe one of us should make a complaint to steam telling them that the new update is stuffed, and also just last night i was playing css fine, i only started getting problems tonight, i haven't changed anything !!!! if its true that steam released this new update within the past 24hrs or so, i really think thats the problem, E-mail me back and or reply back to this, sorry for spam but i really want to play css :(

Sounds like you want to play a little too much :p - Well, I've already contacted Steam, so not much we can do now. You could also send them a note telling of your problems.

I just found out a few more things last night b4 i went to bed, i found out that this strange lag was also in crysis (new game i only just installed) and i had to install new direct X version, so yeah its not just steam games, mind you enemy territory worked fine, but then again thats not a graphic intense game. I also found out that when i spamed my mouse buttons when i was in css or crysis my computer would make a beeping noise!!! so yeah i dunno, im thinking either direct x or gfx card issues or maybe even my avast anti virus, but i love avast :(
Shit part about all this is i tried to do a system restore and it wont work.

Disabling avast and making steam/hl2.exe run in low priority worked for me, that's what some others suggested at the Steam forums, since many others are having the same problem. Should be another month or two before steam notices, so it's a good temporary fix for now. I'll just be glad if they fix it at all, I shouldn't have to disable my antivirus program and run the games in low priority to play the games on Steam.

on your games page, are there any games stuck with statuses such as Updating:0% or anything like that, if there is, pause the downloads.. that fixed my problem that sounds similar to yours, a while back

Uninstalling Avast fixed everything. Dunno why it was conflicting only with Steam, but they just didn't get along.
