Steam game downloads not starting correctly

For some reason when I go to install Half Life 2 and Ep 1 and 2, the download always starts around 74%. I've uninstalled and re-installed steam, deleted cache, blob files etc. and it keeps happening. I can only think of one reason this might happen, and that's because I have TF2 installed, but I can't be sure. Anyone else have this problem? Thanks.

Have you just let it finish trying to download? I've had that happen before but things have downloaded fine.

Were you only having this problem just now? The Steam servers are currently down.

Edit: Oh wait, I thought you said you had trouble with the downloads starting/finishing. Fox5 is right (below).

That's correct. All the Valve games share assets, so if you have anyone of them installed, you have the majority of any other installed.

I let it finish, and now when I try to run the game, it takes an age before it finally decides to do something. Which in this case is to start updating, and then usually steam stops responding. I probably shouldn't have copied my former steamapps folder back in, but that's the recommended method by the valve wiki for keeping/moving your steam install.

Okay, I got past that hurdle, but now Half Life 2 stops responding on launch. I've never had this much trouble with steam ever.

Have steam validate your game files. It's an option if you right click on the games.

Also under the games' properties there's an option to defrag. That might help with the speed since you have files that were copied at different times.

Thanks. I've defragged, checked integrity etc. and it still does it. I've posted on the steam forums but no reply yet. Thanks for the advice here.
