Steam=full of problems...

I bought HL2, installed it, installed CS: S, updated everything...bla bla bla, worked fine. Now, i registered windows and it messed up my anti-virus and programs a bit, but all it took was a fresh install of AVG and the games/other progs worked fine when i rebooted again. Then, after trying HL2, i found out it messed up steam. I thought "no biggie", so i updated it. After that i updated HL2 (after about 3 hours, i'm on a 56k here 🙁).

Now, when i'm offline it "cant connect to the steam network" and it exits. When i'm online it works, but HL2 crashes while it's loading everytime. I'm getting very frustrated, when u buy a $40 game and all of a sudden all of this Steam crap wont even let you play it...

Anyways, does anybody have any suggestions? I thought of reinstalling everything and bear with all the updates again, but then i'll lose all my saves (i dont wanna go though Ravenholm again!).

So, anybody have any suggestions or a way to back up saves?

Thanks 😉

IF you can not get it working back up your saves, uninstall HL2 and reinstall the game and go thru the updates . . . . make SURE you are in OFFline mode after the last update and that HL2 opens w/o being connected to the 'net . . . . you should be good to go.

EDIT: Are your sure HL2 is "messed up" . . . . first defrag your HD . . . . then REconnect to Steam over-and-over again until all the updates FINISH and then try starting in offline mode. i had a similar problem and it took about 10 connects to Steam over dial-up to resolve it so i could play off the net.

Your saved ganes are in Program files - Steam - Valve - SteamApps - "Your User Name" - half-life 2 - hl2 - SAVE

I tried reloading it a few times (no defrag yet) and either steam wont start, have problems starting, or HL2 will come up and freeze in the loading process...

I think i'll reinstall

thanks for ur help though!

Just for the hell of it, turn off Windows Firewall and then see if Steam works.

Control Panel> Admistrative Tools> Services> dbl clk Internet Connection Firewall> set to DISABLE.

Re-boot and try Steam.

I dont have SP2, so i dont think that i have a windows firewall...

Anyways, i havent tried it yet, but man, it still makes me mad (and sad 🙁)
