Steam - Friend Request?

Just got a Friend Request notification via Steam.

First, I didn't know such a buddy list thing in Steam existed.

Second, I have no idea who this person is or why he/she added me to his friend's list (see Topic). Is there any reason for concern to allow the user to see me when I'm online?

 
they prolly played with you on an online game and wanted to be your friend. if you do accept it the only thing to watch out for is if some1 changes their name to something like steam admin and ask for your password and such.

I've never played online through Steam. Hell, I haven't played anyone online since BF1942 a couple years ago.
