Sweet, hopefully Valve will make a Linux version of all of their games. I never could get steam's chat / VOIP feature to work quite right in Linux.

Uh, no. Steam is a content distribution and community platform, not a game engine. It's still up to the game developers to write game engines that will work with Linux.

I don't know what to think of this shit. The Phoronix article says that they libraries are not for servers, then I see this:

http://games.slashdot.org/arti...1&sid=08/11/29/1443227

Then I read this post from the Ubuntu forums from someone who identified some strings.

@ the people that say these binaries are for server use, here are some of the strings:

k_EMsgClientRequestForgottenPasswordEmailResponse

k_EMsgAMSetCommunityState

k_EMsgClientGetLobbyMetadataResponse

GetBillingAddress

etc.

Right, server use

Yeah but it could help put a foot in the door to have more game developers write their game engines with linux in mine as well.

It could, but not really. Devs aren't going to start spending considerable time coding for 2 OSs just because a game can be DL'd in Linux. It'll be nice for any games that are on Steam that can run natively in Linux (Quake/Doom/etc.) but that's about it for awhile.

At the very least it'll bring more attention to linux. Most of the non-engineering majors I know don't even know what linux is. :(

Coding for 3 OSes. OS X uses Open GL as well. Keep in mind Macs are rapidly growing in market share and even the low end Macbooks can run some games. So I think more devs will start coding for *nix/OS X. The UT3 engine has already been ported to Linux and OS X afterall. And there is always iD.
