You sound like a woman justifying her outing at Nordstrom's.

:p

BUT EVERYTHING IN THE STORE WAS 40% OFF AND BUY ONE GET ONE HALF OFF AND I HAD A $25 GIFT CERTIFICATE!!!

Somehow it never works when I try to explain that the starting prices are always high and they use perpetual "sales" to make people think that everything is such a good deal.

Are you talking about Nordstrom's or everything?

The post in this thread have me a little confused about mass effect, should someone get the Deluxe edition or not?

Which one would be better, ME 1 or ME 2?

ME 1 has an 89 score on metacritic.
ME 2 has a 94 score on metacritic.

It looks like ME1 and ME2 are single player only. I was hoping to get something my kids and I could play multi-player on.

That's awesome.

$5 for one of the best games ever made? How could you not buy at least one copy.

Just bought ME1 and ME2. Thanks OP.

They aren't multiplayer at all, and depending on the age of your kids this will be over their heads and not very appropriate. They're rated mature for a reason.

I would definitely start w/ ME1. The story is very important in this series and jumping into 2 wouldn't be right.

Doesn't sound like you know what Mass Effect is all about. Have you played KotOR? I would read a review before buying multiple copies.

Nope

Nope

From the way it looks right now I will probably be just getting a copy for myself.

they are single player "light RPG" 3rd-person, squad based shooters. KotOR is much less "light" in terms of RPG, and it is an awesome, awesome game. it hasn't exactly aged well, though, and the excessive bugs and issues that have plagued it from release could be a deal breaker if you have little patience.

for ME, you really should start with the first one. The games are a bit different from each other in terms of how they are played. It really comes down to personal preference for which one you prefer. I do prefer ME1, but ME2 is much, much shinier.

KOTOR1 isn't very buggy on PC, except it doesn't always play well with Vista/Win7. KOTOR2 -- ugh.

With The Old Republic (MMO in KOTOR setting) coming out in the fall, it's not a bad time to check out Bioware's take on Star Wars RPG-ing.

ME2 is really a sequel to ME1, and is closely linked to it. You will be a little lost in ME2 if you didn't play ME1. The story is an extension of the original, and not wholy unrelated like in many games.

I actually prefer ME2, since it did away with the immersion breaking cookie cutter side quests. Also the limitation of ammo helped the combat gameplay in my opinion. But it does seem smaller than ME1 in many ways since there isn't as much area to explore in any given place it seems.

Watched a gameplay video on youtube, mass effect is in 3rd person?

Is there a first person point of view?

It is only first person when you are zooming in on a target. But it is by default a third person game. Although it is not a free camera thrid person game, so it plays like a first person game. (In other words, the camera follows where your character is facing, so it is still a first person perspective - albeit from behind the person)

What StinkyPinky said. Both Mass Effects deal with mature story lines and have somewhat graphic sexual scenes at the end, and the second has a bunch of f-bombs and s-missiles in it (not the first, though). This isn't like Halo, where the only thing that gave it an M rating was a bit of blood. Be sure your kids are mature enough before you let them play Mass Effect.

And you're better of skipping the Deluxe Edition and buying downloadable content; specifically the Lair of the Shadow Broker pack (you buy it straight from BioWare's website, not Steam). Also, buy the first game before getting the second. The games have a continuous storyline, with decisions from the first carrying over to the second. You're locked out of some story details if you don't import an ME1 save over to your ME2 character.

KOTOR1 is excessively buggy on PC. I have original discs, and it was a PITA way back with my XP setup, and now with my Win7 setup.

what I meant by them being different is that they play a bit differently. both are action heavy, but ME2 felt more action exclusive, and much less RPG--though yes--very strong story elements; but that isn't what makes an RPG an RPG.

The story elements, and the player's control over them, have always been a trademark of BioWare RPGs, and these guys have been setting the standard for what a Western RPG is for a while. And even though the RPG elements have been streamlined, that doesn't suddenly make them less RPG. You still gather experience points to spend on abilities. The only RPG element that was completely extracted was the inventory system (and thank goodness for that).

I just couldn't get into ME1. I like the little I've played of ME2.

But, for $5 I'll give 1 another try.

Steam now seems to have different pricing for different region. First, there is no DAO:Ultimate Edition for me. Now, ME2 is 24.99 after 50% off!
