Steam download speed question

In the below screen shot how fast is that download? Is that really 6.2 Megabytes per second? Is that how steam measures it or do they just use the wrong case for "B"? Wouldn't that be 49.5 Mb/s? I thought I only had a 20/10 connection but I guess today is my lucky day...

that's crazy. I've seen things like that before when I had FIOS though. I believe I downloaded Assassin's Creed at like 4.5-5MB/s when I only had a 15/5 connection. SO looking forward to getting U-Verse 25/6(I've read it's 3, the support told me it will be 6) and getting rid of this 10/1 Timewarner line I have. 25/6 for 65 a month is pretty good.

I've certainly never seen this speed in my connection. I have fiber but it's a local company (the whole development is wired with fiber) and I pay the $55 for 20/10 which seems pretty good outside of FIOS. However, if I can get these speeds often then I'll be sitting pretty.

Steam lies bigtime on their download rates. I've got a 10mbit connection here and steam regularly shows me pulling down 30-40mbps.

I was downloading at ~1.2MB/s (~10mbit) on my ~850KB/s (~7mbit) connection.
Ignore what Steam claims to be downloading at, it's meaningless.

Oh come on. Don't act like you haven't seen applications use it incorrectly ALL THE TIME. Why do you think he felt like he had to ask?

As a general rule, transmission should be measured in bits, and storage / capacity should be measured in bytes. If you're going to show transmission in bytes, you had better damn-well make SURE you do it correctly. However, I've seen apps time and time again that do it wrong.

Steam displays the speed measurement correctly, I know that much to be true.

Accurate is a different question, but I've never seen anything that would suggest they outright lie about the download speed.

I've routinely had downloads going close to 1MBps (combined between a few games getting updated), which would mean I am getting 8Mbps, which here at my home computer is just shy of the line. But I have had downloads go way faster than the connection is actually rated.

It's accurate for me and very fast, faster than I download from anywhere else on the internet.

Ive seen their speeds be overzealous at times, but it generally comes back to normal for me. I can always count on steam to max my connection out. All 12MB of it

If you have something like Comcast, you don't necessarily have a capped speed. Steam has better servers than most people, so you'll get faster downloads from them than most places. I always get good speeds.
