Machinarium is wonderful! It's a bit of a point-and-click adventure title, but a puzzle game more than anything. The game's graphics consist of very beautiful hand-drawn illustrations, and a very moody, atmospheric, ambient soundtrack. (Seriously, the soundtrack is really good.) There are no voices or dialogue - only the occasional little quips and murmurs from your character and creatures you meet throughout - so there is nothing to detract from the moody, atmospheric feel of the game.

The puzzles are very well-designed and thought out. The puzzles you find in each of the areas stand alone and are "self-contained", meaning if you pick up an item in one level, then it must be used somewhere in THAT level and nowhere else. If you solve all of the objectives in a particular level then your inventory will be completely cleared and you will start anew in a different level. In this way, you don't need to wonder if you'll need to keep a certain inventory item or not for later use. You never keep anything in your inventory past the area you found it in.

I highly recommend this game. The music, the graphics, the atmosphere, the whole universe that the game creates is truly unique and interesting. It should also be noted that this game is very relaxing... if it's late at night and you're feeling lazy, and you don't feel like playing twitch-shooters or adhering to any kind of time limits, then fire this game up and immerse yourself in the world of Machinarium.

(If you're bad at puzzle-solving though, then I'm afraid I can't help you there. :p The game has it's own hint system though if you get stuck.)

Machinarium is indeed very cool. It was in the Humble Indie Bundle 2 IIRC, so many will have it already. I need to get back to is as I made good progress, but got stuck and got distracted by other games.

FWIW, Just got an email from the Humble Bundle folks saying the Bundle 2 games have now been added for anyone that bought/is going to buy Bundle 3. Bundle 2 includes Machinarium.

Bought Machinarium for 2.50$ earlier today.
Then I find it gets included in the Humble Indie Bundle 3 later that today, which I hadn't bought yet but then did. o_0
Vampire Bloodlines for 13$ instead of 5$
Anyone wanting Machinarium should go get the humble indie bundle.

Ugh,

I did the same thing this morning.. Oh well, I'm happy to spend the extra 2.50 to support indie devs.

I really love this game. I actually bought the 1C Complete Pack last month during the Steam Summer Sale, which comes with all of the King's Bounty games. I started playing Legends and now I'm hooked. I never played the original King's Bounty for DOS that was released 20 years ago, but I'm playing this one (The Legend, which is the first game in the "new" series) and I like it.

It's a fun little RPG with turn-based combat. Part of the appeal is you can assemble your own army, by mixing and matching different kinds of troops to carry into battle. The game is light-hearted and sometimes even silly (at one point I had an army full of bears), but it's all in good fun.

There are tons of side quests and places to discover. The game constantly rewards you for exploration; if you look in the nooks and crannies of every area, you will always find goodies in the form of gold, leadership, experience, or other treasure. There are no random encounters or enemy-respawns to worry about, so once you've cleared out a particular area, it's cleared for good.

The graphics are quiant and charming, and at the same time very beautiful. Also, you wouldn't guess it, but this game has a great soundtrack. It's high-epic fully-orchestrated fantasy music that manages to not be generic, but rather, very memorable and pleasing. Recommended.

It should be noted that the entire series is on sale for $8 right now! Totally worth it if you're into oldschool RPGs. Play The Legend first, and then play Armored Princess along with the Crossworlds expansion.

I thought it was the same price?

I know I paid $14.something for them back at X-mas? sale, and I still think it was worth it.

Actually, I recall Via posting in the Summer Sale thread, and he said he added the King's Bounty pack to his cart and then forgot to checkout, so he ended up not getting anything. Correct me if I'm wrong, Via. :) Also, congrats.

I paid $6.99 (US) for the Platinum Edition during the summer sale, so it was a bit cheaper. Haven't found time to install them yet though. I assume I will enjoy them, because I really liked the original King's Bounty game I played on my Sega Genesis way back in the day. I also enjoy the HoMM games a lot.

So apparently, quake 4 is on "sale" for 19.99 and doom 3 is on "sale" for 9.99. That seems ridiculous to me for games released 5+ years ago, not to mention bioshock 2 is on amazon.com for 3.99$ , dead space for 11.99$, resident evil 5 for 19.99, I could go on but what the hell is it with id software and pricing their games so ridiculously well after release?

It's not technically on sale, nor is it advertised as being on sale. $19.99 is it's regular retail price. The reason why it's being promoted on Steam right now is because it has actually never been available on Steam until just now, which is actually big news. (Unlike the other Quake games, Quake 4 wasn't developed by id, but Ravensoft. So they had licensing issues with it for a while.)

I've never played it, but from what I understand, Quake 4 was never really that great of a game, and you can expect it to go on sale for at least 50% off in one of the next big sales.

That seems...off. As a big fan of Q1-Q3 I was thinking about trying it but at 19.99, that seems off for a 6 year old game. Hell non sale games on steam that are considered much better and have been released recently are cheaper. SF4, RE5, dead space, bioshock2, to name a few, most of those are 15$ or less on amazon and steam.

Are the painkiller games good? Two of them were rated 30 something metacritic...and Painkiller Black Edition is 81.

Also, here's something I'm going to start paying attention to - does their dev or publisher if that's more appropriate, form a part of a company that's likely to offer these for cents on the dollar as part of a Christmas sale pack? Anything that looks interesting, unless I REALLY want it, if it's going to be part of a pack later on I'll just add to wish list and re-evaluate during the next sale...

This is a good question. Basically it goes like this:

The original Painkiller was developed natively by People Can Fly, and the game is released in 2004. Turns out to be one of the best PC shooters ever. Gets great reviews. Black edition is later released, which includes the "Battle Out of Hell" expansion (also natively developed by PCF, and also very good).

But then - unfortunately - a couple of other small-time developers decide to make their own mods of Painkiller. They took the original game, made their own versions, and actually got them released into retail. The games turned out to be shit. They include "Painkiller: Overdose", "Painkiller: Resurrection", and "Painkiller: Redemption." These games actually paled in comparison to the original Painkiller, which is why you see Metacritic scores in the 30s. It's generally recommended that you avoid them. Not so great.

My advice: Buy the Painkiller Black Edition, and nothing else. If you enjoy games like Serious Sam, the original Doom, or any kind of oldschool-style twitch shooter where you fight hoards of enemies, then DEFINITELY buy Painkiller (to this day, it's actually one of my favorite shooters). However, DON'T buy any of the "sequels". Just... pretend like they don't exist. :)
