Steam customizing help

I'm new to steam. I wanted to use it as a launcher for all my non steam based games. but when you add one to the library, it only shows the very generic icon of the executable while the steam downloaded game icons look all nice n stuff

Is there anyway i can insert a .png image or anything else other than the program's exe icon? Are there any other frontends? something that would give me more control of the look and feel of the GUI?.

Not that I have found. For me it always generate an image based on the icon of the exe file you try to add.

If you take a screenshot of the game using steam, I believe it shows up in background of that game.

didnt work. well i clicked the ss key, but no clue where the ss is at to see if it even took a pic.
Also, how do i prevent that annoying news pop up every time i start steam? god thats so annoying.
*edit: actually, F12 key does'nt wrk. i go to SS tab and it says theres no screenshots, i tried mapping it to other keys but doesn't work.

I'm starting to reconsider using steam and going back to retail boxes

Thats odd, have you restarted steam after the update?
