steam / CSS help

I've been having problems connecting to servers lately with the message "error verifying STEAM ID" or "dropped by server". I decided to reformat my computer and use a different cd-key that my friend isn't using. However, after reformating and reinstall HL2 w/ CSS, it didn't even prompt me for a cd-key. The weird thing is my CSS screen name is already typed in the Player name field in CSS AFTER a FORMAT and fresh install of HL2/CSS using the 5 cd's. Anyone know exactly how do I am able to change cd key's with steam/HL2?
 
and you didn't log on to steam at all? I honestly don't know how it could keep any info if you formatted. that is really bizzare.
 
Wow, I completely ignored the "steam" and just saw "CSS", as in "Cascading Style Sheets."

If you don't wish to confuse me again, Counter-Strike: Source = CS or CS:S. Thank you much?
