Steam controller for old school games?

I've been thinking of ordering a steam controller, but I'm worried about them expecting you to use the touchscreen for a dpad. Biggest reason I want to get rid of my 360 controller is the shifty dpad. Anyone around that beta'd it try using it on nes/genesis/etc emulators?

Think about using an Xbox One controller? The dpad is much improved over the 360

I'd also recommend this over the unknowns of the steam controller. The steam controller looks cool, but there's no telling how it'll be for games like that. At least you'll know going in the XB1 pad will work without issue.

thinking about pre-ordering this since it comes with rocket league. wish there was a way to test it out locally at bestbuy or some other retailer.

Did anyone get this yet? Valve shipped out a bunch of controllers already. Put down a pre-order for two at gamestop but I'm still on the fence.

The controller is on sale at amazon if you want to avoid the steam shipping fees.

edit: I got to try the controller a couple of minutes at a friends house. Honestly it feels kind of cheap and the buttons are way too small and too close together. Not sure how good it would be for games made for the xbox controller. I went ahead and changed one of my pre-orders to the steam link.

Most of the reviews I read say that for games they have used a gamepad for and liked it, the steam controller is flat out worse. The only niche it really fits is people wanting to play some type of RTS like sim city on their couch without needing a keyboard and mouse.

I've also read on more than one site that it feels cheap. Most games these days on the PC are designed with the Xbox controller in mind. I'd just stick with that.
