Steam client update resets all stats, achievements, and... #$%!

Today's steam client reset all of my L4D2 achievement, stats, and worst of all game instructor can't be turned off anymore. I never changed anything since I installed the game 2 months ago, and I saw others with similar issues on steam forums.

I was able to alleviate the game instructor problem by using verify game cache, but still that is not a 100% fix. I am wondering if it is worth it to register steam support and file the problem. One guy said he had this happen 3 times since he got the game.

I have had this happen in the past multiple times as well with client updates, pissed me right off after the second time i got all my L4D ones back again and they got deleted again. Steam support was worse than useless so dont hold your breath on getting them back. Then i decided to say screw it and not give a rats ass about achievments.

Look for Steam Achievement manager --> You can pretty much restore all of your achievements/stats from there.

happens to me often, after a while they all get restored. who knows wtf happens during that time.

Ever since they made the item drops random, I stopped looking at achievements. A shame really because I found that part kind of fun.

After verifying the integrity of game cache of L4D2 it found a file missing, and steam re-downloaded that file which I believe fixed my Game Instructor "forced-on" problem.

I don't really mind the L4D2 achievements (good thing it's not associated with any in-game items or i will be really pissed), but give me back my infected kill count!!!

• Tweaked the connection fallback logic to be more robust

The update did not fix my issue as well and I m guess it's to prevent reset problems in the future.


I received feedback from STEAM support, but their fix did not work for me. Here is what they suggested:

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

This is a mass response for Left 4 Dead 2 stats and achievement issues.

If your stats and achievements appear to have been reset or your stats and achievements are correct in your Steam Community profile but are incorrect in-game, please delete the following file:

<steam installation="installation" folder="folder">\appcache\stats\UserGameStats_<steam3 accountid="accountid">_550.bin

Steam is by default installed to either C:\Program Files\Steam or C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam

If you do not know your Steam3 accountID, please delete any files that follow the above file format.

This should fix the majority of issues. However, if this does not fix your issue, we are working on a system-wide solution and we appreciate your patience.
