Just thought of something. I really like owning the boxes for games and having a tagable disc that I can install them from. This whole DRM install limit from EA is very aggravating. I use Steam and really like the way the handle the whole download your old games tied to your account. I dont plan on reselling any of the games I buy so this is a good solution for me.

I noticed that you can buy Far Cry 2 through steam. Like I said though. I prefer the boxed version. Does anyone know if it is possible to buy it, load the cd key in steam (activate game or whatever) and negate that terrible install limit or do I have to actually buy it through steam?

Thanks in advance.

(Would also like to know this for dead space as well)

I am under the impression that the Steam version of Far Cry 2 comes with the same DRM, so it would be subject to the same limitations as the retail boxed version. So either way, you'd have to deal with the install limits. That is, unless...

You cannot buy a retail boxed version of the game and then just add it to your Steam account (save for a very few examples that aren't worth looking up). I just don't understand how people are going to run into these install limits so easily.

system crash
also, you OWN the game so you should be able to do WHATEVER you want (besides distributing it) with it

Your system crashes (to the point of being completely unrecoverable/not being able to uninstall before reformatting) often? If so, you've got far more issues than an installation limit. And like it was said, you can revoke/uninstall to renew your limits. No big deal.

it is a big deal. kinda. you buy the game and have to put up with that carp, you pirate it and have none of those problems.

DRM has taken things to the point that some people who purchase games have them cracked to avoid the hassles of DRM and the potential problems it can cause on your PC (your optical drives being messed with, not burning at all in some cases, virtual drives not working anymore or the game not installing with that software present). How long till people just go 'well i'm cracking the game anyway so why not just pirate it outright?'

Do you OWN Windows XP/Vista too [assuming you are using either to run modern games]? Do you not have to jump through similiar activation limits with those as well?

Either get use to the drm activation/install limit or completely drop out of the windows and "games for windows" scene all toegher - only use a linux based computer and play all of your games on a console [which has built in DRM btw]. Nothing is going to change - drm will be around until games are no longer pirated - and about the only way that will happen is if ALL games are on-line only and will only work if connected to a server owned and operated by the publisher who sold the game.

Good point columb, XP has an install limit and can be a HASSLE to reactivate. Nothing's more fun than MS's activation server being down and phone support being closed when you reinstalled XP and need to activate it to use the daam thing. This has happened to me once and I ended up screwed until I could get somebody on the phone.

If people are so against DRM, I hope they run Linux, because trying to install Vista on multiple machines due to crashes or whatever won't be pretty or easy.

Yes... you can. I've done it before with boxed versions. Not sure if it still works the same as it used tho though.
