I've heard the online experience of this game is unreliable at best. Can anyone comment on the multiplayer?

I haven't tried multiplayer, but the game is definitely great fun and value for the price.

You have to get used to the spell making mechanics, but once you do get the hang of it you begin to wonder why more magic-utilizing games don't have a similar system.

I'm pretty sure there's a demo you can try. And yes, I do think it's a fun singleplayer game.

I HIGHLY recommend this game, especially if you have a friend (or two, or three) to play it with.

There are two game modes - Adventure (story mode), and Challenge (arena). Both are fairly simply in nature, but they provide some decent challenges and a fairly good variety of enemies to fight against. People that rush through Adventure mode, skipping all of the dialog and not exploring for secret areas / weapons will probably beat it and put it down after a few days.

One of the best aspects about this game is the spell system. You have five slots to choose from 8 main elements (and two "hidden" elements), which will create a spell. Some elements benefit more from each other, while others cancel each other out. While just plain fire will only make a fire "stream" out of your staff, fire and earth together can make a fireball, for example. Once you have combo of elements selected, you can either right click to cast it normally, shift + left click to apply it to your weapon, or shift + right click to do an AoE effect. There are literally thousands of possible combinations, and several dozen of those are extremely useful. Additionally, you also learn special, extremely powerful spells from books (another reason to explore), which require a specific combo and hitting the space bar to cast them. What makes this so fun is the fact that you really don't have time to think about what you're choosing. With enemies quickly closing in, you just need to start nuking things and sorting it out later. If you're really good with memory, you can throw together some great combos. Button mashing doesn't work well here.

Single player is decent fun, but multi-player is where this game REALLY shines. The fact that you can just as easy blow up your friends or yourself with a spell means that one person is fairly easy to control, but when you have two, three, or four running around it turns into great chaotic fun. My brother and I played it all the way through, and there's nothing quite like unleashing your ridiciously overpowered spell on a horde of monsters, only to have it blow up your party instead. It may sound lame, but trust me, it's a riot.

I'd give the game a 8/10, right up there with what I'd give Amnesia, Mount & Blade, Trine, and Plants Vs. Zombies. It could use a little more length and some extra weapons or variety in some areas, but it definitely is fun, funny, and overall a great time.

For $5, this is a no-brainer purchase.

I haven't played lately because the campaign is so short but I'm looking forward to the expansion. Hilariously fun and original game.

Curse gave a much better and thorough review, and I agree with everything he said. I accidently wet myself (with water!) before casting thunderbolt once, I just stared at the screen after a lightning bolt almost instantly disintegrated me, but my friends had a good laugh. You have to think quick, but not too quickly or else you make mistakes. It definitely rewards a good memory (I had to "cheat" a bit and had a list of the useful spells next to me to refer to).

This.

Good fun game with great humour and not-so-serious storyline. Decent variety of enemies and the entire magic combination skill set thing is the focal point.

The fact that your character can get wet and will damage himself/herself when using lightning based spells, unless you cast fire on self, is pretty cool too.

Easily worth the price. Single player is fun, multiplayer is chaos, but fun.

The most annoying thing I've done to myself is sometimes during intense fights I end up throwing up a healing ward instead of a heal or shield... which makes me immune to my own heals... pita

I tired the demo. it was fun for a bit, but I found the system a bit confounding. Maybe there is I didn't see it, but there needs to be a system where you can hotlink combos. ...I suppose that defeats the purpose, but being able to string together multiple combos, when each combo requires a rather specific and somewhat complicated series of keys, is a bit much.

the game seems fun, but a bit tedious. I might pick it up later if it goes on sale like this again.

Just came out and already 50% off?
That might not be a good indication.
..except it's an indie game. And a fantastic one at that.

For anyone worrying about bugs, it's been patched fairly thoroughly since release. Highly recommended.

That would make the game way too easy. Some of the spells are extremely powerful, and the only thing stopping you from using them is how many combos you can remember and how quickly you can type them. Being able to just assign spells to buttons and clicking them at will would make the game mindless.

exactly, the challenge is casting spells correctly. And you really don't need to combo much. Just pop a shield on urself, cast rain (q + qf), then when wet enemies approach you use SAAAR and just freeze them while killing them at your leisure. Or use qrdsr repeatedly and summon a horde of zombies to deal with the melee mobs, elementals are badass as well.

BTW QFSAAA is the strongest move in the game.

yeah, that's what I figured. I kept getting owned in the demo b/c my fingers would slip and I'd type the wrong thing.

I'm too used to button mashing and getting sequences after one button. :\
