Valve identified and fixed a glitch in it's hardware survey Steam samples from it's various users. Basically the survey was only continuing to run checks on systems that had been previously checked BEFORE the glitch was introduced. The updated results are pretty dramatic and the biggest ones are as follows:

The gtx560 (all models) and gtx460 (all models) are far and away the most popular graphics card among steam users according to the survey.
The hd5770 is the third most popular graphics card, but does not have nearly as many users as the survey had led to believe in the previous months.
Intel's integrated graphics solution now represents a significant portion steam user's hardware. Whether or not steam includes IGP's in it's results with a discrete GPU is present is not known.
43% of all steam users are DX11 capable (but pc gaming is dying, how can this be???).
Quad-core CPU adoption rate took a hit.

On a side note, it also appears that Nvidia has overtaken AMD as having the most DX11-based graphics cards among steam members. And, apparently, virtually nobody uses ultra-high def monitors. :( I think that is my next non-GPU related upgrade.

I don't know, it still doesn't make sense to me. So there is a 6770 a 6750 and a 6700series?

So AMD was actually being over-counted. Hmmm.

No % was off. If AMD was ahead lets say 5 months ago when the bug showed up (which is just a random number) then it was unlikely to change unless those users upgraded since it stop polling from installations of steam on computers not already part of the survey.

I think this is showing that, in general, the newer population that got added is a little more average and less hardcore.

So you see more Intel graphics, more IGP, more AMD CPU, less quads, and fewer people with 5+ GB RAM.
Also, relatively large bumps of lower resolutions like 720p (nearly +10%), 1024x768, 1280x1024, etc... with a big down bump at 1080p resolution.

So probably a lot of this is just that Steam is pulling in a broader userbase, with less of the high end gamer geek type focus.

And a staggering 100% of people responding in the Steam survey have Steam installed. That's market saturation right there! Seriously, why bother reporting that? We KNOW they have Steam; it's the only way to respond to the survey. For the next survey, they should have a section for how many people have computers that run on electricity.

I was wondering why I haven't seen the Hardware Survey dialog pop up in several months since I built my new system.

Whoa there, calm down. Maybe nvidia was overcounted.

6 months ago per http://pc.gamespy.com/articles/121/1213735p1.html

Now:

Now: nvidia 49% So AMD share went up, nvidia went down by 10%, intel went up? So how do you figure? :p

so how did nvidia lose 10%? Seems like they were overcounted if anything. Seems like the great majority of users are still using 8800/9800 cards

Take a look at the biggest % changes from last month to this month under DX11 gpu's. Almost Everything from Nvidia for quite a while has to be a discrete video card. So that presence in dx9/10 will keep dropping.

That's with dx11 gpu presence going up +9%

5770 -7%
5850 -4.7%
5870 -4.3%

At least it proves my point:
It's a load of crap which doesn't say much.

Also I love the way that PowerVR has already captured 5% of the GPU market.
I guess that April Fools press release was real after all, and they launched their products before the press release even came out. A 5% showing up from less than 1% is pretty impressive.
AMD and NV better watch out, since "other" is already gaining massively on Intel. Only a matter of time before they are both swallowed up by "Other".

Its good for DX9 vs DX11 / cpu analysis at least , DX11 adoption is rising, other than that...8800s all over the place.;

The real winner in all of this is intel with their HD graphics I guess?

Not at all when you consider that the I3 2100 is technically a dual core.

I'm not sure, but do people with those Atom mini-itx / Nvidia Ion systems try to game ?
The Atom would be counted in some cases as a single core / and dual core?

Ironically enough, steam just now queued me to take a survey of my hardware. It asked if I have a microphone attached and how fast my internet connection was, everything else it gathered on it's own. I have my IGP disabled through the bios, so the survey had no chance of detecting it over my gtx570, so unfortunately I was unable to tell if the survey detects and adds both a discrete and integrated GPU to it's results (when both are "available").

Also laptops. i7 Quads can be pretty expensive. If more people are installing Steam on laptops dual cores will see a decent increase.
